Best barrel length

I have a Pac-nor 26" SS 14T 6BR, I only shoot it at 100 & 200 yards using 64gr bullets. I am feeling 26" might be overkill for these distances. What length is your barrel?

I shoot 8 twists in a Dasher and they are 30 inches. The shortest I would go is 26. Then maybe you could still get one rechamber. For those distances you could probably go a little shorter. I like to get max velocity so I like long barrels plus you can rechamber when worn out. A lot of this would also depend on what cartridge. Matt

100-200yds game 20-26" will do all you need.

300-600yds 26-28" will get the job done.

600-1000yds`30-32" is the best

For 100-200yd game 6mm PPC, and 6mmBR are my choices with 60-70 grain bullets 1:14 barrel .

For 300-600yds 6mm BR is my choice, 105-108 grain bullets 1:8 barrel

For 600-1000yds 6mmBRX or 6mm Dasher is my choice, 105 - 108 grain bullets, 1:8 barrel

My late cousin inlaw shot his way into the Benchrest Hall of Fame at 100-200 yards with a series of 6mms (first the .222 mag based 6x47 and then the 6ppc) built on a sleeved Rem 700 short action with the longest barrel on it 21". Each barrel was set back, recrowned and rechambered at least once, and one of them, a Hart that was a real laser, finished its career at just a hair over 18" after its final "overhaul". The theory in those days was that a bull barrel in a short length was more rigid and thus minimized vibration induced POI problems. Whether that theory is valid or not, there have been a lot of short range BR matches won with bull barrels in the 19"-21" range with the original 6x47, the 6ppc and the 6BR. At 200 yards and under in a BR rifle, barrel length is one of your less critical items in the 6mm calibers commonly shot in BR matches.

Outrider27 thanks, I think I'll try a 20" barrel in 6BR with a 12T. Just for grinns and giggles.
