Best action

for new varmint gun.6BR-1x12 twist
max range 300 meters on groundhogs.
Rem.700 BDL from 1973 "barrel gone"
new Savage 12 single shot.
thank's for any help you can give.
Jon D.

Both great actions, can't go wrong with either. Rem has more hop up parts available, but the Savage is catching up,floating bolt head is a huge plus).

Gunsmithing cost on the Savage would be lower. I beleive you can get a better action with a Rem and doing the truing and sleeving work on it, but it costs $$$$$. My Savage 6 BR 8 twist will shoot under 1/2 and agg 3/8th with SMK 107s and 58v max. BUT, you can get way better triggers for the Rem and all gunsmiths work on them. I got the 3 groove PacNor with a 1" muzzle. Still need a muzzle brake to see hits.

Depends on how far you want to take the rifle and how much money you are willing to invest. And whether you want to do it all at once or incrementally.

If you already own the Savage then get a drop in barrel,Pac Nor) and a chamber guage and screw in the barrel.

Otherwise have the Remington trued up and have a new barrel installed. I would guess that you already have bases and rings for it.

For general shooting I wouldn't bother with the expense of sleeving. If you sleeve you need a stock that will take the sleeve and that will run more money.

If you want a competition rifle shop around for a used BR rifle to get started. The barrel will have some rounds on it BUT you can get started and rebarrel later. If you are just getting started stay with the regular 6mmBR and avoid the complexities wildcats require such as case forming and neck turning.

The general idea is to end up with a rifle suited for your end purpose.

When i said sleeving, I meant sleeving the bolt with bushings to take up the slop in the bolt to action fit. Sorry for the confusion. Although action sleeving when installing a long heavy barrel is a good idea.

Thanks for your thoughts.l have the Rem.700 action.l think
l will use this set up as single shot, with a Pac-nor barrel.
not sure what twist to use.l will not be going past 300 meters.
shooting paper and groundhogs.
Thanks for your help..Jon D.

I had a Remington 700 Varminter,22-250) in an H-S Stock with an aluminum bedding block that had lost its edge. I sent the action to PacNor this spring and told them to duplicate the barrel contour but to chamber it for 6mm BR Lapua no turn neck and that I only planned to use it for informal paper punching and varmint hunting out to 350 yards using 55 to no heavier than 70 grain bullets. I told them to use what twist they thought best.

Sin weeks later my action and new barrel arrived. I mounted it in the HS stock and proceeded to break it it. I started using Varget powder and worked up to 34 grains behind 55 Sierra BlitzKings, 55 gr Nosler ballistic tips, and 58 gr V-Max bullets.
The barrel they used is a 12 twist 5 grove barrel and does it shoot.

I ordered a set of Wilson Stainless steel dies which are superb. This gun weighs 10 lb.2 os. which is perfect for carrying but is heavy enough to hold well over my shooting sticks. All three bullets will shoot groups that can be totally covered with a dime and are devastating on chucks. On night I went out with 20 cases loaded with the Sierra 55 gr Blitzking and went 20 for 20. Out to 325 yards it seems to shoot as flat as the 22-250 but is more accurate. Load development was much easier that with the 22-250's I have built.

What would I do different again? Not one single thing. I think my gun is perfect for my purpose.

Ed l think you have just what l want and l think l will do the
same but for the stock,l have an old Mac.sitting around that
needs a home. Thanks to all for your reply"s
