Best 6mm bullet for 300 Yard Prone shooting

The Berger 105VLD has several records under its wings! Seems like a pretty safe bet! Good luck! Lee

The bullet that consistently gives me the highest scores and x counts is the 107 SMK. You do have to sort them.

Tony, +1 for Jerry's comments. Just installed another 6mmBR barrel. Last one loved the Bergers this one loves the SMK.
attached photo of 500yard 5 shot group with 107SMK (unsorted) driven by varget at 2930fps very good conditions. I helped new owner with his load development as well as installation. Needless to say he was pretty happy with his new barrel and the Sierras but have had the Bergers do similar in other barrels. At 300 yard this group would have been around half inch wide by quarter inch high.
In light winds the flat based 80 gr Fowlers and Bergers are super accurate too.

90gr Lapua Scenar. Shoots more consistently than other bullets in the two 6BRs I use.

But we have also seen some amazing groups with 103 Spencers, 105 Bergers, and 95 Bergers.

I've been meaning to try some of the Lapuas in 6mm. They work great in my 6.5 though, their quality control seems outstanding (weights, diameters, bearing surface length and meplat pointing all seem great)

An F Class buddy won F(O) in the Ontario 300 metre Sierra ISU match this past July. He was using 105 Bergers in his 6mmBR.

Have heard comments that Lapua Scenars are slightly undersize. Just bought some 105 and 90 Scenars for my new 6mm Super LR being built even as we speak.

Measured bullet diameters and got the following:
107 SMK .2425
90 Scenar .2425
105 Scenar .2425
105 AMax .2425

Have never bought Bergers.

The national prone Any-sight record at 300 yds. was shot with Serria 107's. 200-19x. 6brx 31.8 grs. Varget, Rem 7.5 primers.

I didn't see anybody mention it, but Randy's 95 gr BIB FB bullets shoot outstanding in my 1:10 twist 6BR at 300 yds. 1/3 MOA routinely even with the idiot like me driving in my Krieger barreled Savage Target action. Easily to keep in tune. Love that bullet. Tim

300yd is shot in F class here in Australia and lots of people have switched to the 103gn Copperhead in their 6BR,6Dasher and 6x47s. I heard someone in USA has been doing well with them in 600yd BR as well. They have measured and shot better than any others in my BR,Dasher and 6x47.

Thanks for all of the responses. I have a number of the bullets mentioned and am familiar with most of the others; however, I don't know anything about the Copperheads. Can anyone direct me to a website or something?

I agree that the gun will tell you what works best, but i have never met a Krieger that did not like Berger 105 VLDs. EXCEPT, berger changed these and the new versions have one of the lowest BC's of all 105-108 grain bullets; I am VERY disappointed by this. I use their 105 VLD Hunting bullets now. These are the same thin jacketed VLDs they used to sell as VLD match bullets.

TonyR, are you asking this question with the assumption your barrel has enough twist to shoot any bullet? If so, I would go with the heavier bullets that your barrel can handle. If you are willing to use a slower twist barrel, then I think some of the flat base lighter bullets may win out, except in very windy conditions.

Just my theoretical musings. To put things in perspective, I like to shoot 100 meters because it is a much shorter walk to get my targets!!

Ron.
I was looking for a bullet that had been very successful in 300 yard competition using a barrel with the correct twist. My guns are set up switch barrel, so I could use any length or twist required by the bullet. I have watched some short range BR shooting and people do seem to use the flat-based bullets at shorter distances, but the BCs are way down so they would be at a disadvantage in higher winds. On the other hand, there have been several threads here about boattail bullets requiring some distance before they settle down, so I guess there is the usual set of trade offs to consider. In any event, I have my 1:8 twist with the 105 VLDs for windy days because that is what I shoot at 500 and 600 yards anyway. I was just curious if something else would be better at 300 yards.

Tony, The 80 Grain Flat based no doubt can throw tiny groups at 300 yards and are therefore preffered by some benchrest shooters especially in light winds. Our (AUS) F class targets however have approximately a 0.5 moa 10 ring. With fewer wind flags and less advantage in shooting much better than 0.25moa (in the meat of the ring) most F class shooters over here prefer the better BC bullets. The 105/107 class gives a big advantage with wind over 80 class at 300 and only gives a little to accuracy (if much at all). I have shot reaonable scores with both. I haven't tried the copperheads or 90gr Lapua yet but will give them a try prompted by this thread.

I am no world class shot by any means (and am humbled by the company on this site) but I like to look at it like this. On any given day I go to the range 6 or 8 shots out of 10 I will guess the wind within 1 mph (generally less on gusty days etc), with the remainder they are generally within 2mph but occasionally misread one and get a "wide". Scores typically range from 95-98 (/100) at 300.

Now in comparing these bullets I like to think of it like this: The 300 yard windage of these bullets is around 0.55 inches per 1 mph for the 105/108 class (at 2900-2950fps) and 0.9 inches (80 gr at 3100fps - mild load but accurate - maybe the 90's could be pushed to this speed?) For me assuming the 105 group aggs around 0.25moa with no wind then 1 mph will just stay in 10 ring, but 2 mph can get pushed to 9 ring. Assuming the 80's are a little more accurate (0.2moa agg) then a 1mph gust can occasionally push you into the 9 ring. As I said I am no world class shooter but it takes pretty good wind reading to take these out at 300 on "any given day" and shoot a better score. Typically I am a few points behind with them when I try. I have no doubts a better wind reader than I can shoot them very well though.

200 to 300 yards bench rest is a different story....
