Best .22 Cartridge to run 90gr Berger VLD's

Ok so I'm finally back with some speeds

My buddy's are running RL15 in the 22Dasher and getting speeds in the low 3100 with the 90's out of 28" barrels

One of them has a 22-243AI with a 7.7 twist barrel he has run the 90's to 3600 but says he gets better accuracy when he keeps them in the 3500 range. His barrel is 29" long.

My 22BRX barrel likes 31.5grs of H380 under the 80.5 b/c mine is just an 8 twist and the 90's are marginal on stability. As I stated before I'm running a 27" barrel and getting speeds in the 3350 area.

Now being you want to keep your barrel 24" or less. I still would suggest the 22Dasher just simply b/c of the inherent accuracy of the case and the effiecient powder burn in a shorter barrel. The higher capacity cases need the longer barrel to get max speeds with slower powders. I would also still run a 7 twist barrel especially if you go with a short barrel that way speed isn't as big as issue to get the bullet stabilizing.

I don't own it but to say a 12 twist shoots 90's seems like a stretch to me. Like I said I don't own it and have never tried it. I just know an 8 twist has it's issues with the 90's in certain guns. Some will shoot them and some won't.

Hope this is helpful
Interesting thread Hope every one has a good day

13red56,

I really appreciate the information.

A 20" barrel really seems to be the direction that I leaning toward but the 80gr Berger would be fine if a good caliber & barrel combination could be found.

My biggest requirements are accurate, easy to load and the brass being fairly easy to obtain.

Thanks again,
Jim

I just finished up my boys 9 twist 22-250ai and did a little fire forming. I could tell the 75 amax was on the edge of stable. Bergers websites stability calculator puts full stability and maximized bc at a 6.5 twist for the 90 vld.

FWIW, the hornady 68gr over RL15 shot best out of the 27" 9 twist

My rifle is a Savage LRPV. I called the factory & asked for a 7 twist. They said they would after a little pleading & a 17 minute wait. All the factory safety/warning roll marks on the barrel. I started at 35.5 grs. of H4831SC & increased the charge until I was happy with the accuracy.
I will try & find the box the rifle came in to post a pic.

I'm running a 223ai with 27 " barrel and getting 300 fast with 1/2 mom and better. With Bergers and Sierras , the Sierras seem to be a little faster. Forgot 1 in 7.5 twist Bartlien

It's a thunder beast 30ps. It has my son's name and last 3 digits of his birth year for the serial number. I bought a 30p1 with his little brothers info too

I thought it looked like a TBAC, I own both of them also and they work great. This .22 build will run the 223CB(whenever I decide on caliber).

That is a cool idea on the serial number.

Thanks again,
Jim

I have a 22x47L shooting 80 smk, 80 amax, and 80.5 fb in a 26" barrel. I am getting 3200-3300 fps with H4350. I wish it was shorter. I am not an expert at reloading but its has been pretty easy to load for with great brass.

I've pondered building a 22x47L.

I was scoring a match with a target at 1308 yards and most of the shooters did not hit it with cartridges from 6 dasher to 6.5 SAUMs and a handful of 284 Wins.

The wind was brutal (25-35 mph @ +/- 90 deg) and cold, 7-12F. Anyhow some fellow named Mike Luckett (iirc) whipped out his 22x47 and smoked it on the first shot. 8)

Pretty impressive to me.

i haven't built this but i would design a 22 around the 6mmSLR case. I think the mods to the 243 win to meet the 6 slr would be outstanding as a 22-6SLR. the slightly shorter chase the longer neck and the availability of 243 brass was my consideration for this design.

good luck
Trevor

Mike Luckett....? I believe he is a gunsmith/Government Hunter over in western Oklahoma... I talked to him about building a rifle last year...if it was him...then it's not surprising that he hit it on the first shot.... that's how he kills so many coyotes.

How long do you want your barrel to last? I shot 80 grain Bergers to 600 yards in competion using the .223. Now the .223 AI is getting popular. Kind of plain vanilla but it is quite efficient. .22x47 is a .222 mag, a GREAT cartridge.

Just a general question......I'm asking NOT picking at anyone.........but, increasing powder capacity in a case then bobbing the bbl to 20" seems counter intuitive to me.

I've read that it usually takes 3 or so steaming loads to grow the brass to "need trimming" length and with .223 being so plentiful that it isn't hard for a guy to gather 500 or so LC pcs, why, do the AI thing if it would take 1500 shots to take advantage of the zero to minimal growth/trim needed length?

With 20" of tube, then to maximize the burn, then a faster powder is needed which means, usually, a smaller grain size, therefore not needing case capacity. Annnnd unless the BR guys have discovered something different, it seems they usually like about a case full of powder (load density).

Just questions, as I learn more and more the more I ask.
