Best .22 Cartridge to run 90gr Berger VLD's

Trying to decide on the best cartridge to run 90gr Berger VLD's in a Short Action Savage and I would appreciate some advice and suggestions.

My initial thoughts are to go with a 22-250AI, with a reamer built for the bullets and brass but I would appreciate some input.

Thanks,
Jim

I would go with a 22 dasher. Hard to beat the inherent accuracy of the BR based cases. You can run a 7 twist barrel and get a reamer with enough freeborn to utilize the case capacity. The dasher should be easier on the throat than a 22-250AI and the speeds are going to be close. I personally have not done this but a few shooting buddies have for 600 yard matches. (DISCLAIMER) Also I'm not particularly a fan of any form of 22-250.

13red56,

I appreciate the info.

Do you know what kind of velocity they are getting from their Dasher's with the 90's?

I do not have any experience with the Dasher's, what kind of OAL would I expect with the 90gr Berger's?

Thank you,
Jim

I GET AROUND 3125 FPS W/75GR VLD'S IN A22 DASHER U SHOULD GET AROUND 3000FPS I'D SAY.I'VE NEVER SHOT 90GRS

I have a 7 twist barrel and shoot 90 gr. Sierra using 35.5 grs. H4350 in a standard 22-250! Don't know the velocity...or care! The bullets go where I want them to!

I have a 7 twist in a standard 22-250. I use not the fastest load but the most accurate one. With the 90 gr. Berger VLD's I get 2973 fps avg. and the last 5 shot group @ 980 yards was 6.25". The throat is waaay better than i thought it was going to be. I check often with my bore scope but no new surprises. H4831SC has worked very well in my rifle which has a factory barrel.

I do not know but I can find out for certain on their speeds. On a side note I'm running a 22 BRX 27 inch 8 twist barrel so the 90's are marginal for me. I'm running the 80.5 Bergers in the 3350-3360 with H380

I have to ask who is making a factory barrel with 7 twist in 22-250 that shoots 6 inch groups at 980 yards?

I know, kind of makes you drool on the keyboard. Could cause you to go from F TR to F Open

I have never shot that bullet but have shot several others through my 22x47 Lapua. I've had excellent results with all bullets so far. Mine likes H4350 and RL17.

I shot 90's out of a 22/243 with a 12 twist barrel and they shot OK. 80 gr SMK's shot lights out. I think if I would have loaded the 90's a little faster it would have been ok. Shooter on here goes by Calib has that barrel now maybe he'll have some input.

Phil,

I will look at the swift. I have shot or been around a swift.

Does the swift perform well from a 20" barrel(sort of leaning toward a short barrel)?

Thanks
Jim

Jim,

With a short barrel I`m not sure with the 90`s......

I`d think that you would want significant boiler room....ie 220 Swift / .22 WSSM....etc. but the short barrel is something I have zero experience with.....

Phil.
