Berger sample bullet Test

Ok guys I went this afternoon with 2 of the 3 bullets loaded with Varget to do some testing. I ran them over a Chronograph at 200 yds for 3 shot strings to develope aload and see what needs to be adjusted.
I have a grasp on what i feel ea needs and will load ea load up using 2 different neck bushings the one used here and a .262 Bushing and head off this weekend to shoot them at 600 yds for a report of 600 yd accuracy as well.

If by any chance I have a rifle to use next weekend I'll shoot them at a 600 yd BR match for real world performance in match conditions.

My testing is being done right now at the utmost best condition I can get.

So far my outcome is the 107 out performed the 108 on an overall avg as one can see here in the photos.

Rifle used in this test was the Lawton Dual Port, Barrel is a krieger 8.5 twist with .236 bore x 28" chambering 6 Dasher .268 nk loaded rnd is .2665 The OAL measurement is measured via SP comparator off the ogive. CCI 450 primers were used as well.

Hi James,

It will be interesting to see what five shot groups you get at 600 yards. It may change your mind.

On your other post regarding the measurements can you explain what those Junke numbers mean?

Danny

Hi James, looks like you got the rifle shooting pretty darn good!I shot some 107's last night and found they like in the lands but the 108's like jumping.010??I'll be shooting both bullets at 600yds this weekend at W.P.. Where were you seating them at?When I put the 108's in the lands .010 the group was ugly-about - .745" at 100! all vertical.

Danny,

The Juenke machine is an ICC unit. ICC Standing for Internal concentricity Comparator

What it does is find thick places in the jackets or voids between the core and jacket.

My limit on the ICC unit is 5 deviations. Vern claims 15 deviations is .0003 I find it that's somewhat off I find 5 units to be .00015 and 15 units at .00045 anything over 10 is used for fireforming or trashed. 10 units is sighters and 5 and under are record shots. Mines modified to talk with the computer and keeps records on a chart for ea bullet spun numbers them and stores it all in a data base. I have bullet blocks just like a loading block that I sit ea bullet in and they are numbered in acordance to units measured and bearing surface length's.

For those of you wonder what to sort within I sort with a spread of .0015

600 yds will be a real test for these bullets I'll do it when it gets real late in the evening with no wind and mirage.
I'll take whats left and shoot them in a Registered match in real conditions as well for a comparison to how they perform in wind mirage and so forth.

Matt,

The OAL of the chamber using the SP gage is 1.820 so my bullets are .014 into the lands.

With these bullets being made in the same die and having the same configuration once you find the seating depth for one the other should be right there with it. This has always been my experience, not to say I'm right.

Danny,

You mentioned about how the 108 wil ldo at 600.... I'm goibg to say from many rnds of testing and shooting long range that stringing you see in those groups at 200 will only multiply at 600, Now it may all come out with a .001 tighter neck bushing I have seen this happen also and proved that this past weekend at Piedmont gun club were I tested the 9 Twist barrel at 600 using 2 different neck bushings with the tighter bushing yielding a much more flatter group over the one .001 larger with everything else being the same.

James,

Thanks for the Junke info, now I understand what your measurements mean.

Shot the bullets again this morning at 500 meters in some interesting conditions. Overcast, wind gusting 5-15, rain and a bit foggy.,So who needs that interesting). Of the four bullets tested the new die lot 591 105VLD's shot the best group 1.214 followed by the 108 @ 2.181 then the 107 @ 2.350. In all fairness to the 107's four shots were in .913 with the wind catching the fifth shot and ruining the group. The 105's shot 2.261 which you could say was better than the 107's but not really.

In the limited testing that I have done it appears to me that in calm to light conditions all three of the bullets will shoot as well as the 105 VLD. But when the wind comes up and things turn sour the 105 VLD then shows its stuff at the longer yardages. In a match I wouldn't hesitate to shoot any of the bullets at the closer yardages, but in the wind, and past 400 yards, I'll still reach for the 105VLD's.

Danny

Danny,

Good call on the wind catching you on that one shot for the 107.

There's a point where BC is going to take over in accuracy at long range and I'm unsure of where it is. Some of the shooters that's been around longer than I may know where it is. I do know thoguh The 187 BIB's don't give anything up to the heavier and higher BC bullets at 1000 yds. I will take a bullet thats consistently more accurate over a bullet with higher BC anytime. The limitied number of bullets given to us to test really won't give a fair test to there consistency. One of your posts showed the 108 being hands down the best bullet then it looks like now maybe the 107 showed more promise over the 108.
What I'd like to see is enough bullets to shoot a 4 target agg of ea weight in LG and Hg class that would be 8 Target agg and this should show or give a better showing of which will out perform the other.
I may have enough left over to shoot 2 Targets for 600 yds next weekend and will report back on the final results. If I get results this weekend with no more than 25 of ea to be sued I will have enough to do a 4 target agg for one class and 4 for another after calculating what I have shot and what will be left over. This will leave 1 of the bullets left out for a 4 target agg though so I'll have to choose the best 2 performers from testing this weekend.
