BERGER 6.5 140 Hybrids for hunting ?

Has anyone tried the Berger 6.5 140 hybrids for hunting yet. I am shooting a 6.5-47 Lapua. I am getting 2980fps out of a 26" barrell.

Holy Shiznit!!!! how in the heck are you getting 6.5X284 Velocity's out of a X47Lapua??? Wowser. What Kind of Chronograph are you using? Sorry for the questions.

I was thinking that wasnt possable even with a 30" barrel but I guess i could be wrong.

Yea wow! what is your load. I might switch. to the 6.5x47L
I been shooting the 6.5CM and i can get 2,700 out of a 22" sporter barrel. at max.I was thinking i might get 2,900 or so out of a 26" but dont know for sure. As for the 140 VLD for hunting . I think the speed is the key to how far they work well. They do work well as a hunting bullet. I went down to the 130 so i could get into the 2,900's. as it would seem to work out to 600yrds. I have not shot any game with them yet. but i have shot a few with the .270 150 VLD and have been happy with it. my friend shoots the 7mm 140 VLD in the 7-08 and has shot several deer and coyote with it. all fell right there. I made a nice 200yrd shot on a deer this last season with the .270 150 and it went 20 feet. but you new it was hit hard. it did a good job. a few around 400 yrds also went 20-40 feet. but they were all allready spooled up.

I saw a post on reloadersnest where a guy said he was getting those speeds and had a hard time believing it.....what kind of pressure must that be running? But may beee......

I have shot a white tail and couple hogs with them and wasn't impressed. Berger hunting bullets are much better suited for the job. Herb

How long is that barrel getting 2980fps out of the 6.5x47 Lapua? As to the 140 Hybrid this is a Target bullet and not recommend by Berger for any hunting.

Jin See answered the same question just a couple weeks ago and said they just punched holes in them and didn't do much internal damage. He wouldn't recommend them for hunting. That is why I suspended testing them in my 6.5 WSM and switched to the 140 A- Max's.

brianc74, Re your getting 2980 fps in 6.5x47 (26 inch barrel) with 140gr bergers, can you share your powder make and charge, I'd lay odds you are running way over safe pressure. dooley

The powder is RL17 40.5 and cci450s. Max load is 41 even. The barrel is a Proof Research with a Lawrence liner. The barrell is 26.75" and a 1-8 twist. I got the 2980fps shooting 140 amaxes. Elevation was 4000 and a temp of 50'. The groups with the amax are 1.10" at 200 yards though. I think I may just go with the 130 or 140 vlds.

38.07 2750 fps-55414 PSI ! Near Maximum !
- 38.88 2801 fps- 59127 PSI ! Near Maximum !
- 39.69 2851 fps- 63103 PSI !DANGEROUS LOAD-DO NOT USE!
40.50 2901 fps- 67367 PSI !DANGEROUS LOAD-DO NOT USE!
41.31 2950 fps- 71939 PSI !DANGEROUS LOAD-DO NOT USE!
42.12 2999 fps- 76853 PSI !DANGEROUS LOAD-DO NOT USE!

Not for the faint of hart!!!! New shooters... Please procceed with caution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shot a woodchuck at 200 yards with the 140gr hybrid it wasn't good! Good hit and it looked like it has a epileptic seizure and ran back to its hole. I would run amax for hunting they don't get away.
As for rl17 and velocity I ran 41.5 gr with the 140 hybrid 28" barrel 1in8 2986 fps. I did my load development at 50 some degrees no sign of pressure. But totally got away from RL 17 when I found that velocity climbed when the temp climbed. So if your close to max at 50' you will be looking at problems at 80 or 90 degrees.

i wont use them they punch right holes in 3/8 in steel at 500 yds. i shoot hybreds out to 1000 yds load 40 grn h4350 getting 2850. haveent shot any big game with 6.5x47 yet but hunting bullets put big spot on plate at 850 yds. berger hunting bullets work great on game as i have shot them out to 900 yds and they do better than any bullet i have tried.

I do believe the velocity with RL17. I have shot in the the 6.5 creedmore some, good velocity poor groups. some barrels are faster than other and don't show pressure. I found a decent load with IMR4007 in the 6.5 creedmore 130 VLD @ 2,950 out of a 22" sporter tube. decent accuracy. I bit too much ES. I'm working on that. But i had a 22" barreled 257 rob and i was pushing a 115 VLD over 3,200 FPS with RL17, no pressure signs at all, but the accuracy was junk. The only thing i had shoot RL17 decent was a .270 win and i never chroneyed it. just loaded what i was loading of 4350 and it shot allmost as well. but i have had no luck with accuracy and RL17

This is great. Thanks for all that have given some info. I think I will stay with the 130 Berger hunting vlds and 140s.

We shoot the Target Berger for hunting in quite a few rifles, we use them if the Hunting bullet is a little to aggressive or in extreme cases not making it to target. In something like the 6.5x47 there should be no need to go to the Targets but run a couple hundred fps faster the the Target bullets can be better. Seen a couple rifles that shooting the 140 hunting the bullet would open way to fast and to early but with the Targets performance is flawless, you do loose a little range on the far end but not much.
