Ya I think it is. My Bad. Still a decent bit better than the PRCIsn't that a little generous?
Curious about that 30 nos vs 300 prc. Both are same length basically but the prc has saami coal of 3.7 and nosler is 3.34. The freebore chamber spec is way different. The nosler is a fatter case so i would have thought it be possibly a better design if it was throated the same as the prc and loaded out to a longer col.Again just shows how much different everyone's experience is. My buddy gets 99 grains of H20 in his Hornady brass with sized 30 SM brass vs Hornady 300 PRC at 94.7 H20. Seems more realistic actually considering it's improving an otherwise non-improved case. Even the 284 Shehane gains 3 grains over the standard 284 Win which is probably the smallest increase in an improved design. Regardless, I'm sticking with the original PRC after some thinking on the subject. I need a break from the fire forming game. I don't feel the difference is worth the effort to me. I do feel the PRC case design IS superior to both the 30 Nosler and 300 Weatherby for DBM platforms. Makes the best use of the cartridges length.
Heard info the Nosler is a little better in performance. Can't say as I don't own one.Curious about that 30 nos vs 300 prc. Accroding to Quikload, the 300 PRC and 30 Nosler both have a case capacity of 99.0 grains and the case lengths are 2.580 and 2.550 respectively. I am not sure about neck length but as far as boiler room, they seem like two peas in a pod.Curious about that 30 nos vs 300 prc. That makes more sense.Peterson 30 nos capacity 97.4
Peterson 300 prc capacity 93.9
I'd say there are better cartridges for the 245 than the PRC. Whether someone wants to use it for the 245 is totally up to them. Kinda like the guys that shoot 200+ grain bullets in the 308. They get It done but there are better options for overall Performance. If you are limited to a magnum bf (.530),then for the 245 gr EOL i would say 300RUM
If you are going to move to a Lapua (.590 bf) 300 Lapua or 300 Norma Mag hands down. std or improved.
The 300 PRC would be a waste of time IMO.
Just my 2 cents
I shot the 250 Atips out of a 300 RUM 26" barrel at 2985 fps. I altered the action, bolt stop, and mag box to feed 4" cartridges. Is this going to be a single shot or repeater? Those 245's are very longggg and a 300RUM build will have you single feeding. That's not necessarily a bad thing but something to keep in mind.
If this is a repeater build a 30 Nosler or 300 Norma or maybe even 300 Norma Improved will be good choices.
Depends on what you want to do...your velocity seems low 2694 fps for 245 gr ? My 308 30" shoots 2620 fps with 230 Atip...30 years ago the Sierra manual has 300 Win mag shooting old 240 long bearing surface bullets at 2800 fps with old powders of the day in a 29" barrel. What is your current barrel length 24"? So it looks like your leaving some speed on the table, with all the new powders available. A 24" barrel would be a no go for me..many factory barrels are at least 26" for these big capacity cases. A 24" would be inefficient coupled with a really large case. Is just reaching 3000 fps a goal, probably want a longer barrel than you'd like. A 300 RUM in 26" is probably the smallest capacity and shortest barrel to obtain that velocity. ...But ya either single feed or go with a wyatts magazine box and mill the rear bridge of the reciever back .250" with carbide end mill, mill bolt stop, and tune your new mag to feed your 4" cartridges...may also need a throating reamer, if your chamber reamer has a short throat. This should give you the 3000 fps in a 26" barrel. Mine runs 2985 fps with 250 Atips...the 245s should be the same or faster. Go to 30" barrel and get 3100 fps. Just a long barrel on your 300 Win Mag would be a big help with velocity, and you can do the same treatment to the action and bolt stop, with a new magazine, it will be close to the 300 PRC as they have close to the same capacity, especially when you go 4" with your 300 win mag.I want to build a rifle to shoot the Berger 245 EOL. I've read lots of old threads on the subject, but they were from last year when the bullet was new. Now that the bullet has been out (and unavailable lol) for awhile, is there any consensus on what the best cartridge is for these bullets. I've shot some 245s at 2694 fps from my win mag and see reports of nearly 3000 fps with larger cases. I'm looking at the rum and prc the most, but will consider anything really. All the options on 30 cal magnums is kind of overwhelming. I'd like to keep the barrel length on the shorter side - 24" or maybe 26" max. Wind drift is my primary concern in ballistics. It's easy to adjust for gravity. What would you chamber it in? Why? What velocity would you expect? Barrel twist?
Thanks!
