195 Berger EOL Elite Hunter

Old thread, but I finally got some range time with my 28 Nosler and the 195 EOLs. I'm using the Wyatts single stack extended box.

With a COAL around 3.740 (just a hair shorter than rpierce above), I got 3200 fps
with Retumbo. At that load, the pockets are still tight, with slight ejector marks.

I haven't tuned for accuracy yet, but I'm calling this load my ceiling, and will very likely end up south of 3200.

If the idea of running a 195 gr 7mm bullet at 3100+ fps is a complete pipe dream then please tell me lol. I was just thinking it would be one heck of a gun for large game at those kind of numbers due to the BC of that bullet. Like i said it would be a gun that is shot 100 times or less a year.
28 nosler would work , 7-300 win mag will get to 3050 fps and a 7-338lapua will go way past 3100, I think a good fit would be a 7-300 Norma mag. That's what I would do .

Moose are not a particularly hard to kill. They are not resilient like elk. Hit them in the boiler room with most cartridges and a good bullet and they will lay down and pass. I will not suggest the combo you are looking at. A 195 at 3200 fps might hit the hide and simply explode without penetration. I would suggest another tougher design.

That's exactly what will happen

Keep me posted on how your accuracy tuning goes. I intend to use Retumbo once I get my own 28 Nosler for this load.

Ya Ive built over 20 in the last few months. Everyone has shot the same load well under 1/2 moa off a bipod pushing a 195 at 3085-3140 depending on the barrel. I will have a dozen or so in stock in a month. Stiller predators with manners and hs stocks. They will weigh 7.5-9.5 lbs without optics depending on barrel contour and stock configuration. I have had customers send me 1" groups at 600 yds and also a group that was a hair under an inch at 800. Heres a video of one with my slabbed 5 port "Muscle" brake on it. The customers son only weighs 55 lbs and the 195 is going 3100 fps. http://www.piercisionrifles.com/pages.php?pageid=14

I'm working on a decent load with the 195s and the 284 Shehane. 0.300 freebore gets me about 10-15K above the donut region, and I have big donuts in mine since these are about 10-12 times fired.

Going to validate the load this weekend and make sure it is agg'ing well over multiple days and the vertical is good. But, I am essentially getting 3-shot groups to all touch. When I chrono the load this weekend, I'll post it, but from my last data point, it was going 2760'ish with H4831SC.

Running the numbers against a 180gr hybrid going 2850, it looks promising. In a 3mph crosswind pickup/letoff (which is very realistic in our game to see this) at this velocity, the 195 has a 1.25" inch advantage.

With a 2890 fps load with the 180s, it is under an inch (0.93").

Yes, it is all theoretical, but I cannot remember how many times I had a shot just eek into the 9 ring, less than an inch from the 10 ring....

I also have a lot of these 195s and another barrel with a twist rate to accommodate this bullet so I have a vested interest in trying to get these to work.

"What is everyone's opinion regarding taking big game with a 28 nosler pumping these 195s at 3100+ fps? I'm talking about things like moose and bear."

There is two things that bother me about the above statement. First, We here in Alaska try to never shoot a bear at over 100 yards. A brown Bear can weigh 1200 pounds and unless you place a shot correctly, you could have a real "life changing experience". I do not know of any reputable guide who will let a client take a long shot at a "Fuzzmonster". The other thing to consider when shooting at a moose is how far from a form of transportation do you want to shoot something that big? You got to realize that a big bull moose will out weigh a stud quarter horse. You are required by law to harvest all of the usable meat before you pack out the rack. That alone can weigh around 70 pounds. Heck, even with two guys, It's tough to dress one out. They really are that big. As an example, I know of one 62" bull that had to be packed about a mile to get it to a lake where we could get a plane to land. 12 trips later.....
I am not against shooting at targets at long range, I just question the ethics of doing it to an animal. Over the years at Camp Perry, I have been on the first page of the results for the Palma, the Leech Cup and the Wimbledon Cup. I love long range shooting. Just saying.

88.6 grains of reloader 33 is my test load I use in every gun. CCI 250. Customers and I shot 4 elk out to 400 yards last year with them and it left a pretty big hole. We also got one at 1150 yards. I was spotting for him and called the wind. I was 100% certain in my wind call. We were at 10,000 feet elevation and with that 195 going that fast it was the same as shooting my 284 at 7-800 yds wind drift wise.

Ryan are the older Stiller Predators cut out for the extended mag boxes?
The old Predators are cut for the Wyatt boxes if my memory serves me right, I bought an early Predator and seem to remember reading that in the product description. Don't trust my memory and give Russ a call to verify.

lapua cip mag system is being used by some. The new Curtis Custom 338 lapua action will have a 4" detachable mag system. They will also have runs of standard mag bolt face bolts for it. This will be a game changer for the lapua and edges since it currently cant be mag fed and still have a 300 gr bullet throated properly. The lapua action will be available in early spring.
Did the Curtis 338 action ever pan out?

I used the Accurate Mag bottom metal and 3.850 OAL DBM for my 28 Nosler. Took a minor amount of fitting (Dremel) into a manners T3 Rem LA BDL., and a very small notch in the feed ramp on the Defiance LA RUM lips. The shoulder stops on that magazine work very well for the 28 Nosler case.

The mag detach is a little tactical and protrudes more than you want on a hunting rifle. I thought about modifying it by building a new lever with a 90 degree aft bend and cut a slot in trigger guard for it to sit proud inside trigger guard. Haven't gotten around to it yet, or it could be just shortened with a grinder.

The pic is the only one I have, kind of shows it.
