Berger 140 gr VLD Hunting in 7-08

Going to try the 140 gr VLD Hunting in my 7-08AI rimmed and wondered if anybody had fooled with it? I believe RL16 should be a good fit. Just trying to save some barrel wear.

I'm having pretty good results using H4350, but load development is still ongoing for the 140 VLD. Did get a 5 shot 0.41 group @ 100 yds. with IMR4350, but velocities were pretty dismal.

Best to date is a 0.247 five shot with 47.8 gr H4350, CCI BR-2 and Nosler 120 BT @ 2,940 from a 24" factory REM VLS.

Best to work up to that load, but I found no pressure indicators, ... it is slightly compressed.

Straight 7mm-08
2940-2960 in 26Inch barrel
Lapua Brass - BR2's
140vld 10 thousandths past touch
42grains + IMR 4064

my chamber ended up at 42.7 for 20 shot string

I don't run the 140VLD, but...

My 7-08 runs the 140 Accubond and the 140SGK at a bit over 2900 from a 24" barrel, using WW brass and 2000MR with no indications of pressure at all. Loaded to mag length.

I have to imagine that you can get similar numbers. I don't worry about barrel life, it's a hunting rifle, it will last for ever.

Phil,

I have 140 VDL and the 150 Classic coming. Going to find seating depth first with a middle of the road load and then teque the powder charge. Always done it the other way around, old dog is learning new tricks!

Stock Rem 700 7/08 with 140g berger vld hunting. Niece killed a 260 lb buck at 340 yards last year. Here is what they experienced. She shot a tad low, hit about 2" from the bottom of the brisket. The bullet shattered to pieces and blew the heart up, buck was grave yard dead.

This maybe typical of Berger hunting bullets, I don't know.

Brother skinned and butchered the deer, he will continue shooting the bullet, but "stay off the shoulder" was his exact words.

My favorite load with two Remington 7/08's is"

130g Speer BTSP
42g of IMR 4895
Rem case
Rem 9 1/2 primer
seat bullet to barely kiss the lands
3000 fps
Deer flop to 320 yards that I have hit deer with
Bullet is good, near and far. Lots of people have converted to this bullet and approximate load in their Remingtons, Brownings, Tikka's around here because they do not like running deer.
