Berger 105, target vs hunting BC

Why is there such a difference in those two BC? I thought they were made in the same dies but I guess I was wrong. The .53 of the hunting is more appealing the .49 of the target. any input?

I Know they have different jackets but I wouldn't have thought it made that much difference in BC. I wonder why aren't more people shooting them in competition

op,,,,what makes you think that people are not shooting them competitivly,,???...I dont care what it says on the box (or what color it is) ,,,I try to shoot what works for me,,,,,Roger

Just from the majority of the what I hear the br shooter's talking about the target bullets. I can't remember the last time I heard someone say they shot the hunting bullets. I personally typically shoot the hunting bullets and have found them to be hard to beat. But like I said I don't hear of anyone at the local matches or on here taking about em, that's not to say some people aren't. I'm just curious. I don't think the thinner jacket is anything to worry about especially out of a BR so I'm just poking around wondering whoelse is using them.

I shot the hunting 105's out of my 6 BR in an F Class 1000 yard match. The hybrids don't work as well out of my rifle and I was not going to put myself at even more disadvantage by shooting the target bullets. Did OK but the big 7's were in the top spots. Accuracy wasn't an issue--but the wind and my lack of consistency in hold sure were.

I am pretty sure that with all of the calibers EXCEPT the 6mm , the hunting and target bullets use the same BC....same bullet, thicker jacket. I think that the target 6mm 105 is a different bullet.

Berger put an article/blog-post/something up (maybe on their website) once about this. When they switched to the thicker jacket for the target bullets, the thicker jacket bullet would not work in the same mold as the old hunting VLD so they had to rework the design to one with a shorter nose.

The thick jacket didn't let them close the meplat as small as the thin jacket. At least that's what I remember from the original press release or whatever you want to call it. Lots of guys that shoot 105vld shoot the hunting version in long range benchrest.

I use 210 vld hunting bullets and know others doing the same.. Although I can't speak about the 105's, the 210's hunting bullets seem to have a more consistent finished point. I feel this is for consistent controlled expansion but makes for a better target bullet out of the box. A couple folks have a theory on thinner jackets but I don't know how that would hold up in a 105.. The WSM isn't pushing them to the edge so I'm guessing thicker jackets is not all that important, Maybe a 105 in a faster twist barrel and pushed faster is a hole different animal..JMHO

Nothing wrong with shooting a hunting bullet at a paper target, happens all the time. We just don't recommend you go the other way.
