Why 18tpi & not 16tpi?Treat it like a 40x 22 and put a bushing in there for a normal small shank barrel. This one is for a .750-18 but doesnt have the wrench flats on it yetView attachment 1411378

What I've noticed working on large machines with as much as 3 inch hardware, when you get near 1 inch threads they change from fine thread to courser thread, but in the conversation of size it would seem standard for its size if that makes sense? In the machine shop a 1 inch fine thread or a quarter inch coarse thread are both somewhat oddball. Why 18tpi & not 16tpi?
^^ what gerry said. But you can go with anything you like. A 16 or a 20 would be perfect as well. Most every high end centerfire action is an 18tpi so i have the correct tooling for it instead of just cutting a 60deg thread is the end reason i use an 18 any time im coming up from scratch. Why 18tpi & not 16tpi?

Thanks for the explanation. I thought it may be a tooling/cf thing. I've got a Hall rf action that has 750-18 thread & have always been curious as to why he may have done 18tpi. Tooling makes perfect sense. Nice work on the bushing, let us know how she shoots!^^ what gerry said. But you can go with anything you like. A 16 or a 20 would be perfect as well. Alan made 18tpi threads on all the actions he made before he got into rimfire, so all his equipment and familiarity went that way im sureThanks for the explanation. Looks like the Shilen barrel is going to wait a while, I can't tear a rifle down that shoots like this, I will be shooting a match Saturday with it so that will make up my mind but I'm impressed so far. I really like the Aero Solus chassis and Lapua Super Long Range.I just picked up a carbon B14 barreled action and Shilen ratchet barrel. I plan on re-cutting the tenon threads in the receiver to 1.120-20 threads. I will post how it goes.
Glad to know. I have one that is carbon fiber, shoots ok, but not as consistent as I think it can do.Treat it like a 40x 22 and put a bushing in there for a normal small shank barrel. This one is for a .750-18 but doesnt have the wrench flats on it yetView attachment 1411378
Havent finished it. Just got a new diving head to put the wrench flats on 2 days ago. Still need to chase the metric threads- they are a bit tight and i cant cut metricGlad to know. I have one that is carbon fiber, shoots ok, but not as consistent as I think it can do.
Any chance of a finished bushing pic and your end result findings?
I am in the same boat, Older Rockwell 14" tool room lathe and imperial threads only. I would be interested in seeing how you made your bushing and handled the metric threads.Havent finished it. Got be fired up I just ordered a Bergara BXR, carbon fiber, short range varmints only, if it shoots half that I'm happy.Good shooting there.Just finished building second Bergara B14R with custom Shilen barrel , jewel trigger . After watching a few of Kenny’s youtube videos from eagle Eye precision . Wind died a little so I went after work today and shot a few groups at 50yards , then tried a group with SK Long range match ammo .
I have southbend heavy 10 lathe and ordered metric gear set for metric threads . inner threads were done withy a tap .750x16tpi worked fine but next time with do the inner with internal threading bar . it makes it easy when using that you can get a bolt and double nut and tighten bushing in action , then remove bolt and screw barrel in and fit and chamber it .I am in the same boat, Older Rockwell 14" tool room lathe and imperial threads only.
