Bench Source Annealer

I have to drain my lines from the synthetic oil buildup from the propane lines ever so often.

Additionally, I have to turn the propane tank valve on real slow to start out. Make sure your torches are closed before turning on. Then light torches one at a time.

I have not used a regulator in 15 years of use. I have both GEN 1 and Gen 2 models.

my torches keep stopping up and no propane comes out. Any suggestions?

The brass torches have no built in regulator and are designed to be used in an upright position. They will work in a horizonatal position, for awhile, but will eventually run rich and stop as liguid acumilates inside.
Look up the bernzomatic brass torch description they mention using in an upright position.

Lower the torches as far as possible. Set up high like you have them, there is more pull by the weight of the hose, and the position of the clamp is in a place in rotation where it naturally want to settle to the bottom or 5 o’clock instead of about 10 o’clock where it is in the photo.

If you loosen the clamp, just enough that the torch rotates to as close to its natural resting place as possible, it will help. The other thing that will do is keep the flame pointed up and your less likely to heat the case head and burn the paint off the guide plate. Your flame will also be more consistent.

I soaked and cleaned mine once, i was just messing with them. The tiny hole was hard to blow out. Old tooth brush and alcohol cleans them.
Other than that I've not had any trouble.
Every once and a while I'd open them up wide to kinda burn off the carbon. Fun stuff !

Buy torch heads i reckon if they are stopped up.

I disagree with it not being a kind of a regulator.
The big brass body says it's more than just a valve. But wth do i really know !

I just use two bottles and use spacers on the shafts so the bottles will not drop down below where I need them to be. And use channel locks to tighten them, Carefully, so I can still adjust the torches to where I need the flame to be. Seems pretty simple. With the spacers holding the bottles up, the clamps don't have to be as tight.

I had trouble setting up my 20# tank, hose and regulator set up with about 5-6 different torches I had in the shop. They either wouldn't light or didn't burn hot enough.

My son in law owns a plumbing business and got me a Turbo Torch.

Man it's the cat's ass. I now set my Ugly Annealer at 90 and a perfectly annealed 223 based case spits out every 3.2 seconds.

The Turbo Torch flame envelopes the entire neck which turns a nice ruby red and the shoulders set back equally upon resizing.

Hmmm??? Seems like when they're talking about using in an upright position, they're talking about the orientation of the butane bottle???

Over the many years I've been flame annealing, when using the 1lb bottles and likewise with my 20 pounder, I've always had the bottle in an upright position and the hose was long and coiled and never had an issue with any of the propane liquid accumulating in the hose or anywhere else. Also, I've never had that issue with any of my propane fired barbeques. It is important to keep the liquid from entering into the valve and hose.

I used the 1 pounders when I first got mine. Had to tweak the flame constantly as the bottles got cold. 20# tank helped dramatically. I found by placing washers on the posts under clamps it was much easier to get things dialed in. Keep notes on how many you use for the length of bass that you're anealing. Then you'll only need the clamping force to point your flame not hold it all up. Just moved so all of my gear is still boxed up. It takes a lot of washers to get them supported but I don't have my notes available to how many.

I've got two hoses bought at home Depot. 5'+- long. Bottles stay attached to them. Torches stay on machine. It sets on my bench with bottles on the floor
