Belt sander project

A harbour freight 1x30 might be easier and cheaper, not hand held, but a barrel holder with two delrin live centers can take care of that.

Looks like some barrel polishing work is about to be done:D That looks like a very usable rig so remember to be safe and remember to cover the lathe bed!

Great idea. I wan't one. Can't use the 1x30 pedestal sander for polishing on the lathe so I want the hand held conversion as well.

Aluminum oxide grit is good for the ways, gibs or wherever it lands, lol
Yep. Kinda dont like using a tool post grinder for that reason but so on occasion. At least with the belt sander the xslide and saddle will be parked and its easy to cover the ways. I dont anticipate doing a lot of polishing but do on occasion. One of my 1st projects was profiling a barral blank to a LV contour. Wish I had one of these then. When I saw this I thought it resembled a smaller version of what is used to polish crankshafts after grinding.

Im going to attemp something very similar with a spare circular saw. Handle might feel funny but saw was free and should have plenty of umph.

Was going to suggest the woodpecker lathe but it's been posted above.So,here's another tip;

It is entirely doable to make your own belts so,don't think you "have" to build a slack belt machine to any specific size.We use slow setting epoxy on a scarfed joint.Get whatever belt(we use a lot of Klinspor)that's over the target length....look at the popular sizes.4x36,6x48...then cut it apart,tear to width,cut to length,scarf.That just took longer to type than "do".
