Took my SIL coyote hunting last Thursday morning. His first time at this endeavor. I had the ok from a bison rancher who had a bunch of coyotes around to try and thin them out. As luck would have it a siren sound from far off got them howling just as we arrived, 5:45 am so I knew where they were. I had looked the area over a few days before so I had a good hunch where to set up (very important). A virtual amphitheater at the north end of a 40 acre pasture with steep banks and very little obstructions, with a gully running west to where we heard them. Set a decoy on a hump, put sil above it in front of a large maple tree, and put the speaker in a tree past the decoy. I set up on the east end on top the bank so I could run the Turbo Dogg and hand calls and see the action. Did 2 sets of 30 seconds with serenade call rested a couple minutes in between, and finally let it run it full course approx. 2 minutes. At 6:15 saw a coyote standing by the decoy on the little ridge and could not believe sil hadn't shot. Just as I was going to shoot, he did shoot, and killed it. Stayed on stand for another 10 minutes calling and nothing showed. Meet up with sil and he said 3 came out together, but two hung back a little. I congratulated him, and told him to shoot the farthest one next time. But it was a great time. He is now hooked, and lining up places to hunt where he lives , which is farm country. Rifle used by sil, Tikka T3 22-250, 55 grain Hornady sp, mine Marlin X7, 6 Dasher, 87 gr V Max. That was my 3rd dog in a month, beats working.
