Bedding question?

What are your opinions on a proper pillar bedded rifle versus a glued in action? Im talking for a 30br bench rifle. I like the idea of pillar bedded with recoil lug for ease of being able to remove the action but are you realy loosing any accuracy ?

The action i will be using is a Borden Rimrock BRM.

Thanks

Why would you need to remove the action? 99% of winning br rifles are glued in. Theres a reason for that. Theres never a need to remove a custom action from the stock until you need to reglue it which could be many years.

What about trigger cleaning? also what is used to glue them in?

Im also a little concerned about the glue failing at a match. Could you do a pillar bed as well?

Also i see alot that glue ins dont use recoil lugs. How do they control that force from a 30br without a recoil lug.

Custom actions that are designed for benchrest competition generally come with trigger brackets that allow the trigger to be removed (after removing the trigger guard) with the action glued into the stock. Before those were available, holes were drilled in stocks so that the trigger pins could be removed and reinstalled and the trigger guard mortise and trigger guard were set up to allow the trigger to be removed and reinstalled. Given the amount of bedding area and the shear strength of the epoxy, I do not believe that a recoil lug would be needed for gluing in a 30BR. There is another option that weighs a bit more, and which has been done, the so called glue and secrew. The action is pillar bedded and then glued in. This has been done in long range benchrest, and occasionally in short range.

Is there any downfall to using a recoil lug if a person was going to glue and screw? Im also assuming that to do that you would do a concentional pillar bed job but then epoxy in the action?

I would not think that using a recoil lug would be a problem. I have a straight glue in of a barreled action that was already put together with a lug, and it works just fine. The action is a tuned up 722 and the stock is a prototype of the McMillan EDGE. The barrel is a tight neck .222.

I glue in actions with integrated recoil lugs all the time. Ive done a ton of remingtons with no recoil lug and only the one rear guard screw. The 30br is not enough that it needs any screws at all set up as a 13.5lb rifle for sure. I have a 40x in 30br glued into a tmbr mcmillan with zero screws and no recoil lug. I also have a 700 in the same type stock with no lug, no screws and it holds a sporter world record. It has a hv taper barrel

I emailed Borden yesterday evening and got a reply this morning. Quite suprised by that didnt expect anything until later in the week.

They suggested glue and screw as in a pillar bed as well as glued. He also said the recoil lug wouldnt be necessary if glued.

I have lv ppc rifles that have been glued in for 20yrs with zero screws and no recoil lugs. If you have a dial indicator and check the best pillar bed screw in job thats ever been done youll see why to glue one in. Like with everything else just test it.

Ok so do a standard bedding job with devcon steel or aluminum then once that sets use a thin coat of jb weld to glue it in?
