Bedding question

I am bedding a 700 SA into a Bell & Carlson M40 , I have done a few bedding jobs in the past but am still learning so I need some help . I am considering on removing the area under the white tape ,my thoughts are if I open this area up the excess bedding will flow into it and then I can cut it out square with the front of the aluminum .

I don't think there is anything to gain bedding that far out on the barrel and may even cause problems.

I usually put a dam of some kind (plumbers putty or the like) directly in front of the lug to keep bedding material in the lug channel and no further forward.

I don't think I explained what I was thinking very clearly, what I intended to do was cut out a section forward of the block in front of the recoil lug. When that caught the excess bedding I intended on removing any that would be in contact with the barrell. The other option would be to make a dame ahead of the lug a gene noted.

I knew what you meant but you're making this more complicated than it needs to be. Take the piece of tape you have an X on and move it back to the lug recess. Run it out over the edge of the stock to the right and left sides. It catches all the excess bedding compound and pops out leaving everything clean.

Dave hits the mark.

I do as Mr. Tooley described, here's a reference pic:

Can see the blue masking tape between the MarineTex and stock, it just chips right out. Only need a bit of cleanup with a Dremel to get any leftover...
