Bedding a Savage 110 Action

Will be bedding a McGowan 6.5X55mm barreled Savage 110 action in a Boyds Pro Varmint stock. 26" barrel and 0.8" at the muzzle. My first thought was to bed only the front, rear and sides of the action. The barrel nut and barrel would be free floated.

I am wondering if a partial or complete barrel channel bedding may be more appropriate. When only a Savage action is bedded, is the barrel nut also bedded? I think I have read somewhere that the barrel nut should not be bedded.

Would like to hear your thoughts on the upcoming bedding job. Thanks in advance.

I suggest looking at the HS Precision stock for the model 12 with a magazine, and see where the aluminium lock is placed.

Matter of preference as to bedding ahead of the lug.
I only do it for heavy straight contour or heavy varmint where I bed about an inch of the barrel shank.

Bed under the lug. Don't worry about anything forward of that. And yes
what Boyd mentioned.....Float the tang.

I bedded the nut on a Savage #10 in .223. It shot terrible. After removing the bedding from the nut with a dremel tool, it was 100% better.

Yep....way too many stress points when the nut is bedded. You also want to make sure that the lug indexing notch gets clearanced after bedding.

I do a full diameter rear pillar and notch the sear for clearance, rather than notching the rear pillar for sear clearance. Not everyone agrees with this approach but I've had no issues.
