Bedding a heavy barrel!!!!!!

Hey guys, I've bedded quite a few guns but have a question with the heavier barrels.

I have a 7 contour barrel, from Douglas, mounted on a standard 700 action.

Normally on the rems I free float the entire barrel. However with this heavy barrel should I bed into the shank at all? I'm thinking yes to give some extra support.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!!

I always bed the first inch or so on my 700s with long heavy barrels. Not suere if it's necessary but that's a lot of weight hanging out there.

They are all standard 700's and a few XP-100's with never a problem...
Never was much into semi floating a barrel.........

I never have been either. I think I may just keep this bad boy free floated all the way.

Back in 2006 I switched stocks on my 1000yd LT-Gun. When bedding the new stock, I bedded the first 2" of the barrel channel ahead of the lug to contact the barrel (a 28" barrel).
Shot it like that for a while and then one day, while at the range, I shot a couple groups at 500yds, then took the stock off and removed the 2" of bedding to float the entire barrel surface, and then shot a couple more groups.
The accuracy to group size and vertical dispersion remained the same to both scenario's. Only difference was a POI shifted of about 1-MOA.
Then when attending matches again with it now 100% floated, was shooting similar size groups/scores at 600/1000. I am still shooting 100% floated yet today, and from barrels up to 32" long.

Happy Shooting

Thank you sir!
