Bedding Question

I've got a 30" heavy varmint modified #9 contour Bartlein on the way for an F/TR gun build. The barrel weighs about 7.5lbs and will be going on a trued 700 action. The contour on the barrel is straight for 5" then tapers down to .935. Do you guys recommend beding part are all of the first 5" of the barrel channel on a heavy barrel like this? I normally don't bed in front of the lug but the heaviest barrel I have is a Rem Varmint contour.

Stick with the way you have bedded in the past.
Works for the guns I build even with 1.25" straight blanks.

I'm far from an expert on the matter, but I feel that it is easier to add bedding than it is to remove it. Maybe full float it and if you aren't happy, bed in front of the lug a few inches.

Even with the axle-size contour no need to bed differently. I'd go maybe 0.75" to 1" contact with barrel channel in front of lug and free float rest. Bam

Erik - why not? I've had many highly accurate rifles bedded maybe 1" past lug and freefloated remainder. Works great.

What happens when you change barrels? Do you redo the bedding forward of the lug?

yes

I saw this one coming when he posted the question over on SH.

I have tested this. One of my light guns I bedded the chamber area, shot it for a while, then ground it out. No change. I would not bed past the lug, as I found no benifit, and there are possible downsides.

6 of 1/2 dozen of the other lol every ones got an oppinion so I suggest that you do what works for you.

no body right no body wrong lol

On ftr rifles I build I will bed out beyond the lug 2 inches but will put a peice of duck tape on the barrel this gives me .020 clearance between stock and barrel I only bed out that for to add additional support to the stock. Will also cut two 1/4 inch grooves in stock in this section and those are also filled with the bedding material stiffening the stock at this point I have found this way takes the stock vibrations and bounce out . Never had any problems doing it this way.

Thanks fellas. MsTrophy, never heard of it being done that way, but must be something to it, you sure got the trophy's to prove it. Do you cut the 1/4 inch channels into the lug area or stop before it?

I personally only bed 1 inch of the barrel unless it's a really heavy barrel, then I bed 1.5 to 2 inches. No spacing either way. I always bed it tight to support the weight from pulling down on the receiver and to reduce barrel whip.

However, I have never heard of the grooves in the fore end? I like it. I will be bedding 2 new rifles I just built when I get back home. I will give that a try.
