Bedding a 10/22

Since the 10/22 only has one screw & Somewhere I read or heard of bedding the full barrel rather than the action (because of just the one screw) ... What has been your experience ? My 10/22 has Kidd trigger system & bolt & a Volquartsen barrel . Not BR accurate but for my purposes it does well. Just thinking about squeezing a bit more without spending a ton of $$$. Already the Kidd alone cost more than what I paid for rifle.
Leave alone or what ??
Thanks

Have you read any posts on rimfire central

Unless you are shooting Wolf/Lapua/Eley match ammo I wouldn't waste to much time or money on it. I was shooting Fed 525 box through a chrono and the FPS was all over the place from 600-1300.

Thanks for the replies. Somewhere, quite sometime back I read an article ( online or in magazine ???) that had the idea/premise of bedding the barrel vs bedding action since there was only one screw. In other words a free floated action. Have no clue how long ago I saw that. Since I may be soon recuperating from some major throat surgery that limits work & keeps me at home. Also recoil will limit my 308 Win time while healing. I thought working on the 22 would be a easy but not demanding project.

I do have Lapua, Wolf and some old Fed (UM-1 ??). Even have a few hundred RWS I "found" again !!
Again, Thanks

Bed as much as possible around the receiver lower edge and rear..Get out in front of the draw wedge and bed 1 inch of the barrel..While you have the action and barrel out take a look at possible pull down angle of the barrel....If it is there loosen the draw bolts and shim between the barrel and draw ledge and retighten before you bed..If you want take the bolt out and bevel the lower edge where it first contacts the hammer..This will raise the contact point and give extra leverage in cocking the hammer(physics 101) make the contact point 0.070 dont take more than 0.100 off the bottom..polish the bolt and hammer face..This will help reliability when shooting subsonic..

Will;

I too have a Kid trigger system on mine as well as a thumbhole stock. I left the factory barrel on because I was shooting squirrels, nothing more.
I will say this tho:

You have installed a fine barrel, now use some Eley "semi auto" ammunition.
I found that the Eley 10x "red box' was most accurate, but didn't have enough to properly work the bolt to eject the empty. Apparently they knew this as well and offer the "semi auto" for that purpose. It's just a tad faster but not fast enough to take away from accuracy.

Good luck,

Joe

I've bedded a few 10/22's with the receiver floated, and it seemed to help over doing the receiver only..
Nothing major, but it shoot better that way for me.....

I bedded and free floated mine based on the info at rimfirecentral (receiver and inch or so of the barrel). It has a Green Mountian bull barrel in a laminante thumbhole stock. I added a few Volquartzen trigger mods and it regularly shoots just above 240 using SK or Wolf Match ammo. I can't bring myself to spend any more than that on rimfire ammo. I did notice about 3-4 points difference after bedding and I am VERY happy with the rifle.

I have done a number of 10/22 bedding jobs and in every case the accuracy improved with bedding. Here is a great source of guidance in the process: http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=250931

I have found the "pillar" bedding piece is really not needed if you bed both the action and the first 1" of the barrel.

i bought a kidd receiver with the bolt on tail section. put it in an archangle stock, with inlet for the tail piece, and skim bedding. shoots pretty good, not as well as my anschutz 1907, but pretty good.

Thought I'd bring THIS old post back up to, the top for anyone with, a Ruger type, 10/22 and wants to, know HOW / what,.. to "Bed" !
After reading, a metric, Chit Ton of, posts, the "conclusion" seems to be,.. BED the Action and from Zero under the Barrel up to 3 inches of barrel bedding in the "Shank" area ! Personally, I'm gonna Bed my action with, the Little Crow, GRX "Recoil Lug" attached and, 2 inches of, the Barrel !

Djdillondon on RFC experimented with bedding the barrel on CZ 455's. If I remember right his conclusion was it didn't improve the accuracy but it made it so the rifle had the same POI no matter how you held it.

On a 10/22 I'd try a pressure pad under the barrel first. Use pieces of a bicycle tire inner tube placed 1" to 2" from the end of the forearm. This has shown to improve the accuracy of a 10/22.

@ Hacker,.. I currently have my Ruger 10/ 22 fully bedded with, slight upward pressure on, the Factory 22" SS bbl and the POI "is" repeatable but, the groups are not great ( probably due to, Factory Chamber ! ). I will be trying the method I noted above first with, my NEW GM Bentz chambered, Barrel, but IF it doesn't shoot "well", your Tire inner idea sounds good, thanks !

who are you going to have chamber the barrel.. maybe talk to @zeke06

USMCDOC,. It's a, Green Mountain, 20" SS Sporter, Bentz chambered bbl, nothing fancy ( $150 shipped ) as, it's a going in, a Fact Ruger "sporter" Wood stocked Rifle with, a few Volquartsen Parts ( 2.25 lb Trigger, extractor, F-pin, etc. ) for, Sage Rat / Cottontail rabbit hunting and for informal, Target & Plinking ! Hoping for, 1/2 to 3/4 inch, 50 yard groups with Fed Auto Match or, mid priced, SK ammo. I know, it's NOT, a KIDD but, should be fine for MY uses, as I only have a 2x7 Burris scope, on it for close range, Hunting.
Just something to "Play" with, in the Idaho Desert ! I try to get "out" shooting at least, once / twice, a week for, my sanity ! I HAVE, a .22-250 Rem and Tikka .243 win that ARE, "Tack drivers" ( both, are, 1/2 MOA rifles ) so don't need more in, a .22 LR. But YES, I heard that, Zeke builds terrific .22 Barrels ( I read, a LOT ! )

My 10/22T responded very well to traditional bedding. The rear lug engagement and the recoil lug/front pad are bedded, and the heavy barrel freefloated.

I also tightened the shank in the receiver with a foil shim. It's a great chipmunk rifle.

Mine has, the New, Little Crow, GRX, "Recoil Lug" that, will hold, the Barrel onto, the Receiver and will be Bedded in the stock, just like a Big Game rifle.
The rear "Corners" of receiver will also get bedded, plus 2" of bbl "Shank" area for, support of, barrel ( may not be "necessary" ) and could easily, be removed.

i hear ya there my man!

Bedding the barrel only was the accepted norm about 20-25 years ago. Now the accepted practice is to bed the action. Many people add a second screw to secure the action better in the stock.

RFC can be a very contentious forum, but there is some very good info available there in the sticky threads.
