No, never tried vise grips, might work but sounds a little harsh. ???
How do you suggest removing this barrel with 100% certainty that you wouldn't put a mark on it? Some of those are pretty snug from the factory.
I imagine the guy that paid the big money for the one I saw sold on GB would really be PO'ed if there were marks left from a barrel vice that weren't disclosed in the auction. I know for sure that I would be. "Mint" is a pretty bold statement.

I've never removed a factory installed barrel myself, but have heard some horror stories and seen plenty with marks left from a barrel vise.
Sounds like you have figured out a way to do this without messing up anything, so I guess I was wrong.

The bottom line is, if you would ever want to sell it for a high dollar now or later...... then don't jack with it. I cringe at the thought of you tearing up a good vintage collector's rifle like that when you could use many a donor rifle for your purposes. That rifle is better then money in the bank, as the value will only keep going up. But, it's your rifle and your prerogatives, so do as you like. Not to be redundant.....I'm outa here.

So it's OK to chance messing up a mint 700 Varmint Special but not a H&H double?

Here's some photos of my most recent project this year completed by "incapable" me who "doesn't work with his hands"















I could have opted to use my $1,200 VSSFll as the donor rifle for this project, but instead I bought a new plastic stocked $795 VSF to tear apart and do it. I sold the unfired fluted factory barrel and that brought the cost of the donor down even further.

I was just about to leave the thread with my last post when I thought I felt a breeze of hot air hit me at the door on my way out and cause me to fall back in. Ya think I might be able to leave now?? ;D

VB, did you hurt the barrel when it was removed? ??? I only see stock work. PB please read the post! And I am sure some of the old-timer's on this site will understand it was one I just should have avoided!
