Bass Pro and Cabela's merger deal complete

From my point of view, traditional 'brick and mortar' stores are in trouble. They can't find/afford knowledge, helpful employees, they have limited selection due to overhead/shelf space, and they've eliminated the incentive to visit the store due to things like self-checkouts, no one competent enough to check the inventory if you call ahead, heck, most the time they put you on 'hold' and never come back, and parking spaces that are only big enough for compact cars.
I live in a rural area. It's MUCH better for me to find what I want online and have it show up at my door, and most times in just a couple of days. I know I'm getting what I WANT, not settling for what I can find on the shelf, I don't have to waste my time driving to multiple stores hoping to find what I'm looking for, I'm not burning my time or gasoline driving anywhere, and I don't have to deal with anybody who conveys the attitude that my presence in the store is the most inconvenient and irritating exchange they've been forced to suffer all day.
I don't HAVE to deal with all that crap, other than shopping for groceries, which ALWAYS reminds me why I despise walking into a store. And so I choose not to.

The ONLY thing I care about either Cabelas or Bass Pro is I have been a cardholder with them for 20+ years. I now have $25,000 to use IF I need to>>>but the nice thing is, I get 5 percent back on every purchase I make anywhere at any time! About every 2 years or so I cash in those points on Cabelas clothing. In the last dozen years or so I have never "paid" for a stitch of clothing! It's all come out of the "points"!

Aside from which store has the dumber employees, how will it effect "competitive pricing"......Imagine if Lee were to buy all the major reloading manufactures and they were the only place to purchase from......What would be their incentive to offer reasonable prices? What would be their incentive to offer quality merchandise? Maybe Lee isn't the best company to use, so lets change it to RCBS, LOL. Do you think Dillon, RCBS or Lyman would be sending us new parts for free after we tell them that WE broke it if they were the only one to buy from?

Its like anything else, the more options you have as a consumer, be it cable, phone or internet providers the better the service you'll get, it doesn't always happen that way, but in theory it should.

I know we have no idea what their business plan is for the future, but it seems like we the consumer usually get short end of the stick.

Mark

+1. And their business plan (as in all other mergers) is to make as much money as they can. And when people/customers keep buying, a few customers can complain to their hearts content. But the company Balance Sheet that's shows a HUGE profit is all that matters. So if you feel you are dealing with stupid, ignorant and poorly trained personnel employees, why would you keep buying from them? I suspect this merger will survive just fine and a majority of buyers won't be changing their buying habits UNTIL a majority becomes the UNHAPPY customer and then they'll sell to another company. That shortly after all the Board Members have new Yachts and the CEO a new island.

We need to get Walmart to sell reloading supplies!:D I already buy all my jeans at Walmart, at 1/4 the price of most other stores.

The Walmarts near my house do. They sell hodgdon powder serria nosler's hornady bullets and rcbs reloading tools. They just need more options though, they mainly have hunting and varmint bullets. I wish all Walmarts would get on board because the prices are good.

Walmart designates space to income generated, make way more coin on Chinese coffer pots. Other than small crap needed in a pinch, never components, I shop online. If any local WM has something, they should offer online I'd think. Just going in a LGS and listening to idiots enough, Walmart would have to be 10 times worse.

I was excited when Bass Pro opened here in Charlotte around 20 years ago. Sure enough there was more variety on the shelf than the locals carried, and the staff was knowledgeable and helpful. Today the invenory is primarily second rate store brand, little knowledge or concern by the help, and terrible prices. The focus has shifted from being a sporting goods store with a few items for the family shopper, to the exact opposite. Still have my BP card but rarely go there, and just to get staples like hooks and the like. Prices drive you to shop on line, and forget finding reloading supplies in stock anyway. They are not even competitive with local gun stores. Wonder what they will look like in five more years.

"I can just get it on the internet" is the root of the problem.
I used to think that, and in a lot of cases maybe a better deal. BUT after I factor in shipping, hazmat fees and the cost I'm probably paying more per pound of powder than going out and getting it locally. Let them pay the fee and transport fees.

It is good news - Cabela's is the worst managed chain I have ever dealt with - the people knew nothing about what they were selling - ask them a question, and they would make up an answer.
I called Cabela's the other day to inquire about an order. Of course I gave my name, order number, date of order, item, etc. etc. The young lady's first question was, "Did you order this item from Cabela's?" I didn't quite know what to say.

And there's a glimpse at part of the problem as well. I bet you'd be astounded how often someone calls to complain about an order that was, in fact, placed with another retailer.
John Q. Public can be pretty dense at times as well.

Are you kidding? I gave the woman (girl?) every piece of information she needed to check on my order and I did it quickly and logically. If my name or order number wasn't in her computer or if the order number used a different sequence from what Cabelas usually uses, then the question would be appropriate. As it was, it was she who demonstrated her stupidity, not me. What's more, not only was I polite, I'm the friggin' customer, not John Q. Public. She's the clerk representing the company and she isn't supposed to act like some snot nosed kid walking down the street with earphones on while they're texting their Oxycontin supplier.

I've met countless stupid people in my lifetime. But it would be wrong of me to assume that someone is stupid before they have a chance to do something to prove it. It was certainly wrong of her to do that, especially as a representative of a large company.

Perhaps you see things differently and don't mind it when people tag you as a dolt without any evidence.

Take it easy. I wasn't referring to you.

What I am saying is, they've been trained to ask that question early on before spending a bunch of time trying to research an order placed at another retailer. Reason being, people forget where they've ordered quite frequently.

If you took it that I was implying you had made this mistake, I apologize. I thought my post was clear.

I don't think incompetency is limited to Cabela's, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain, etc. I came to the realization several years ago that when dealing with hired people in general at businesses, expect incompetency. I'm never disappointed that way, and if I actually interact with someone that has a brain, I'm delighted. Sort of seems like the education system turns them out dumber and dumber as the years go by.
