Bass Pro and Cabela's merger deal complete

I saw on the news this morning that Bass Pro acquired Cabela's for $4 billion, wow $4 billion, that a boat load of cash. I'm not sure if this is good or bad, seems to me that competitive pricing is out the window now. I don't shop at either very often but here in St. Louis we have both stores and they are about 6 or 7 miles apart. I guess we'll just have to pull up a chair and see.

It is good news - Cabela's is the worst managed chain I have ever dealt with - the people knew nothing about what they were selling - ask them a question, and they would make up an answer.

Bass Pro is no better. The guys in the clothing Dept can sell fishing rods when that Dept is short. Product knowledge is horrible at both chains.

Just got an email from Cabela's explaining the merger.

Going to any big box store - be it Cabela's, Homers Depot, or Wallyworld with the expectation of getting product advice is risky business.
It's been my experience if you can get an answer for 'Where is it?, or 'How much is it?', you've done well.
There is the occasional expert/ enthusiast present, but not often.

I have been to Cabela's where the employees are pretty knowledgeable and friendly. Now, the new store is Richmond, VA. area leaves much to be desired. You can call, the phone will probably be answered in about 6-10 rings. The kicker...As I started buying cleaning 'stuff' for my new .20 Practical I called them about the availability of a .20 caliber die stem. The employee in the powder and bullets section wasn't sure they carried them. Then I said, do you have any that will fit a .204 Ruger? The guy says, Oh yeah we have them. End of conversation.

I dont hardly ever shop at Cabela's because of their price but I was near their store awhile back and needed another shell holder or two for loading. i couldnt find the shell holders so I ask the gun employee if he could point me to a case holder for a Creedmoor. He said,"we dont have holders for anything that new". I said, "its not that new". He came back with,"well' we dont have anything that old".

The last time I was in Bass Pro, just a couple of weeks ago, 1 lb. powders such as Varget and Unique were nearly $40/ea.

I left without buying anything.

So I'm less than excited about the merger. Looks like I'll be buying my stuff on-line from now on.

Here in Austin we have a bass pro up north and it has the outrageous price on powder, 37-39 bucks for a pound, the cabelas down south is more tolerable but rising. It used to be a reasonable 26, now its 32 within the last couple months. Maybe its just coincidence but it started rising right about the time that word of the merger started. I hate to think it will go all the way up to bass pros price points when I just want to buy a pound to try out of something new. The upcharge to buy that pound to test almost eliminates the savings of then buying an 8 pounder online if you like it. So this current trend is just going to cut out any powder purchases from them entirely on my part.

Ya I go to the one in buda alot and have noticed the prices on powder rising.. Never been to the Bass pro because of hearing about their prices..lol The one thing about Cabela's is you have to shop their sales if so their sale prices normally are as cheap as ordering things.. If not they are way more expensive...

Most of their everyday prices are just WOW high.. I have purchased some guns from them but always make them price match academy which is normally at least 50 bucks cheaper.. At my local academy you lucky if they have 2 of the same model normally both scratched or something so I go out to Cabela's and have them pull 2 or 3 and hand pick the one I want... I am always shocked to see how many guns they are selling at Cabela's price though I guess some people just don't care..

The one that got me was gander mountain on the N. side they were omg are you serious high??? Even during their close out sale they were WAY high... I went in there once when it was open and laughed all the way back out the door and once again when they were closing and did the same.. Some people must have way more money to throw away than me or have no idea what things sell for..

ROFL.. that's a guy who has already planned a day of doing nothing...ROFL

This offends me. I need to be compensated, or have all of the stores torn down, and thread removed ; ) They're doing this because I'm white

"I can just get it on the internet" is the root of the problem.
The problem: the general population lacks the ability to discern quality, and the ranks of reloaders are too small to support well stocked brick-and-mortar shops full of knowledgeable well-paid employees. When there is no "Value Added", and instead mountains of crap at ripoff prices, and slack-jawed numb nut employees treating the whole thing as a government job, the die is cast. The BassPro in Harlingen, TX received massive tax breaks, yet is on life support. Combining one big box loser with another to create the wallmart of overpriced "sporting" Crap is pure genius

Aside from which store has the dumber employees, how will it effect "competitive pricing"......Imagine if Lee were to buy all the major reloading manufactures and they were the only place to purchase from......What would be their incentive to offer reasonable prices? What would be their incentive to offer quality merchandise? Maybe Lee isn't the best company to use, so lets change it to RCBS, LOL. Do you think Dillon, RCBS or Lyman would be sending us new parts for free after we tell them that WE broke it if they were the only one to buy from?

Its like anything else, the more options you have as a consumer, be it cable, phone or internet providers the better the service you'll get, it doesn't always happen that way, but in theory it should.

I know we have no idea what their business plan is for the future, but it seems like we the consumer usually get short end of the stick.
