Barrels

What are the up and coming barrel makers? What barrels are winning the most matches? Are the Brux and Rock Creek barrels easy to work with?

Does anyone have results and/or experience with these barrels or any other barrels?

Thanks for any information that you can provide.

I use Hart and Bartlein barrels, I tried a few others but the ones that seem to last the longest are these. Both shoot excellent.
The lilja one I tried was also excellent.

Using a Brux in .308 and after only 350rds Im very pleased with it. Very accurate and very easy to clean. Have a second on order for a 6.5 build.

I have had the best luck with Hart, Krieger, and Shilen, I haven't had the pleasure of owning a bartlien but I have shot them and Packnor (sp) chambered in .338 Lapua that shot very well.
Wayne.

P.S Welcome to the forum.

I am having some Carbon issues with my 6mm Brouthons, but I think at this point it is due to the Chambering job, not the Barrels. I have watched some 30cal Broughtons really hammer at 1000yrds! My 30cal Brux's is shooting very well at 1000! I hear from a very good Source that Brux is using a very High quality of steel with their barrels! I have bought another 30cal Brux for another build, and Plan on At least 3 more in the near futrue for my 6mms! They Clean very easy, Breakin is just as most. Well under 20rnds and no copper yet to be seen Since shot 16 After 636rnds. I will add that I'm hard on my barrels. I shoot F Class so I shoot 20 to 30rnd strings, and don't clean all weekend. So I put anywhere from 150 to 200 rnds down the tube with out cleaning. Once home from a match. I spend 2hrs at the most cleaning. I know when my barrels are clean because I use a Hawkeye Bore Scope to confrim it. Although you do have to find the right cleaning solvents. Currently I use Mpro7, and Montana Extreme bore solvent. This gets rid of all fouling in my Brux barrel, My Broughton barrels need a little JB bore paste to get the Carbon out, but thats after 150+ rnds. I like Broughton barrels, but like Brux much better from the results I'm getting.

Any of my Brux barrels shoot very well and were easy to work on..
Brux and Pac-Nor are the only ones I use these days....

It is pretty much luck of the draw amongst the top makers. On different rifles I own 2 Shilens, 1 Brux, 1 McGowen, 1 Benchmark and none shoot bad. In terms of pure accuracy the 2 Shilens stand out as best but they are in cartridges that are more inherently accurate.

So take your pick, I do like a cut rifled barrel if there is going to be a lot of cutting on the outside of the barrel like fluting or heavy profiling. My two Shilens are lightly tapered and I sure can not complain about their performance. The only brand I can say I likely won't buy again is McGowen, just a step above Douglas in my opinion.

My next 6mm will be a Krieger though.

I think the chambering job, and 'break-in' on some, is more important than which brand of custom barrel you order (unless we're talkin' about the real low end ones).

Another vote for Kreiger and Bartlein....
i started with a pre built 6Br that was un named but said to be a Hart.. shoots Great .. made a switch barrel rifle with 6 an made a 30Br using a Kreiger..
also made a .25cal with a Bartlein.. the bartlein seen to clean easier..
i'm thinking another soon an may go with a Bartlein
mention already is the smitties work an break in is important

I have used hart, shilen, and pacnor. The hart and pacnor are by far the most accurate. I have not tried a shilen super match yet and would like to in the future. My pacnor is in 5.35 smc an oddball 20 cal and it shoots outstanding. It shoots a hole at 100 yds. and in the 1's at 200.

Shilen is making some real good 6mm ppc barrels right now. they are really focused on this market and they are lapping the barrels just right. Hard to beat for a short range barrel. the truth is that they are all good. if they were not they wouldn't be in business. My favorite barrel is the one i can get the quickest when i need one!!
