Barrell set back

Would like some advice on my wife's Dashes. It has +/- 1300 rounds through it now and still shoots on a calm day .450 to .550 groups at 400 yards. It has a #17 Kreager finished at 30'' on it. Should I set it back 2'' now are wait until it starts to drop off?
Thanks

Terry, I don't think it was worth it, but i did the same thing with one that i changed the reamer. I had the threads cut off and rechambered and recrowned. I looked in and there is slight rounding of the lands but it still shoots the lights out like a tenth. so go for it now don't wait...... jim

Shooting that good I wouldn't touch it till it went totally south. And even then once it goes south it might now ever shoot that great again with the new chamber.

For the cost of re-chambering (approx. $175+) it's a toss up. A new custom barrel blank will set you back approx. $300. Figure you are going to spend money re-chambering an old barrel when you could be putting that money toward a new barrel. Just something to consider.

If it shoots 1/2" groups @ 400 yards, I would continue to use it and bring home the $ and/or trophy's ! I assume that you are talking about 5 shot groups ?

If you have the ability to set the bbl back yourself, then I certainly would. It is best to set it back at about 1/2 the estimated bbl life. That way the lands and grooves ahead of the throat still have good dimensions.

If you wait till it starts to fall off in accuracy, I would say that your odds of drastically improving the bbl life for more that a few hundred rounds are slim and not worth the expense.

The more rounds down the bbl, the lands wear and get bigger. A new throat can't fix that.

Never had much luck with barrel set back personally. I would put the money towards the new barrel.YMMV. ;D

Thanks for the advice. It is 5 shot groups. I don't shoot it it is like I said my wife's and she beat me and several others in our last 2 matches. I think I will get another barrel ordered now and have it when I see it falling off have re-barreled.
