Barrel ?

I ordered a .30 caliber, cut rifled bbl from a reputable barrel manufacture to finish @ 30" long. It came shipped to me 31" long. Also, I specified the contour to be 1.25" for 6" tapering to a finished muzzle of .940". The twist that is scribed on the breech end is what I ordered, as is the .940 @ the muzzle. But, according to my dial caliper the breech end is 1.243" and 6" from the breech is 1.238". My questions are, "Is 1/2 of an inch on each end enough to remove before chambering, & have quality rifling for the entire length of the bore ?" And, should I be concerned about the breech end not being 1.25" for 6" ? I haven't spoken with my smith about any of this yet. I will not name the manufacturer at this time. Also, I waited 5 months for this barrel.

If it were mine I don't think I'd be all that worried about it. Let the smith check out the important dimensions when he lines it up for work. If there's any problems with the ends of the bore I'd think he'd spot that as well.

There is generally no need to remove much material from the breech end. The chambering reamer will do that. It is the muzzle end that is more critical. The only reason the slightly smaller breech diameter might be a problem is if you were planning to use a barrel block.

I should have realized that about the breech end. I am not using a barrel block so I guess there is no reason for me to sweat the small stuff. Thanks sleepy.

Just what the doctor ordered. The excess comes off the muzzle end. The breech end is marked. I know you are not sweating a couple o' thou over the chamber area. Normal length for that area is 3-4" to leave room for cut-off and set back. All good, just shoot it!
