Barrel Vises...

Gentlemen,
Dunno what happened to the thread on Barrel Vises that was here yesterday, however, I did want to repost the links to the Jerry Fisher Barrel Vise I had recommended. It has not been out for that long and it IS expensive, however, I've never come across anything that is quite the equal of it...fwiw & imho

Below are D'Arcy Echols blog comments regarding the Fisher Vise. Pictures and commentary from one of the finest riflesmiths in the business...

Btw, what happened to the original barrel vise thread?

I don't know what happened to the other thread. If I'm allowed conjecture, I'd say it smacked of blatant advertising and was deleted but that's just my opinion. There is a want ad section that maybe, just maybe, it should have been posted on.

fwiw,
If that is the case I should make the obvious clear... I, in no way, have any stake in Jerry Fisher's Barrel Vise other than owning one. I would also think that if that was the reason for an issue with the other thread that a warning could have been posted before erasing the entire discussion. Assuming, and we all know where that leads, of course that was the reason for the threads disappearance...

Regards, Matt.

I wasn't accusing you of any thing, Matt. I've seen other threads disappear before. I have seen one guy pose asking a question and when he gets his answer he deletes the thread.

Did Jerry copy mine? He is an excellent craftsman.

Butch,
I don't think so... It is said to be a rather polished copy of one he has been using for 40 years. D'Arcy had mentioned using the original in Mr. Fisher's Shop several times over the years.

UU,
I didn't think you were accusing me. I just wanted to make it clear I paid, likely too much, for my barrel vise and sure as heck don't profit from their sale.

Must admit I don't think much of someone deleting a post when they have their answer. It does not say much for the effort everyone else has contributed to the thread. Not to mention failing to leave a resource for someone else down the line... If indeed that is what happened...fwiw & imho.

Regards, Matt.

Matt, Do you know the term burleywood? My West Virginia friends call it sarcasm. I was throwing a little burleywood. Mine is like Jerry's, but he hasn't seen mine to copy it and this is the first photos of his that I have seen. I also use die springs to open the vise.

Threads are usually deleted by the original poster. If the Forum Boss doesn't like something, he usually locks the thread. Once an OP is satisfied with an answer/answers, there really is no reason to leave the thread hanging there.

Butch,
Nope. I just learned the term burleywood... :)

That is STOUT looking... I may have to copy the barrel vise platform. That is too neat...

JRS,
Another way to look at it I guess... I still think it is odd. People don't have to answer the same question over and over again. Hence the search button becomes the new users friend. I, for one, am not going to take time to track down pictures, outside discussions, and general above and beyond for one guy to look at and delete. Can't begin to estimate the times I've read someone else's thread/question and picked up something completely new. I still say let the thread stand and it'll go away into the archives in it's own time...

Qualified people, of which I don't claim membership, are not going to answer the same question, with the same degree of thoroughness, over and over again if it is going to disappear into oblivion when the OP is satisfied...IMHO

Regards, Matt Garret.

I disagree. There's value in the thread remaining for search purposes.
