barrel vise

looking to get a barrel vise. i wont be doing this very often. curious what everyone suggest. i have looked at the sac ones but not sure i can justify the price for little used tool. and i also looked at the viper. thanks in advance

mainly non factory. maybe a factory here and there but mainly aftermarker

I use the Viper bench barrel vice. It's a tool that you may not use often but when you need it nothing else will do the job as well or as easy. After market barrels are fairly easy, factory barrels not so much!

As long as it has 4 bolts to secure the barrel in the vise your good, better clamping power.

I made my own when I got my first lathe and mill. I’m cheap and it was a fun project. I even scrounged the material from the drop bins

I literally have used brass and aluminum bushings in an old Rigid pipe vise for about 20 odd years now...but I'm just a gun plumber. Lol! Not sure it matters much as long as it gets the job done without damage, how the bbl comes off and on. If the old bbl has no value, leave the bushings out and that sucker will come out. Lol!

I have the Wheeler barrel vise, bolt it down to the floor at the top of the stairs out in the storage shed, and I've removed several OEM Savage barrels with it. It works fine for my needs, I mounted the vise in a position where it is about waist high while I stand on the staircase.

I've been using a PMA barrel vice. I think it's similar to the Viper.

I bought the Viper first. Fought a few barrels off with it then bought the Sinclair vise with the proper bushings and haven't looked back. The Viper was a let down for sure. Works great for simple savage barrel swaps but thats about it. Every time I tried to take off a Tikka or an old Remington or heaven forbid a Mauser it just made me say bad words.

I have the Viper and it worked fine when I changed the barrel on my RPR. And that barrel was a mother to break loose. Nothing slipped or marred the finish of old or new barrel.

I have a few of these on stock. Supposed to be the best for breaking those stubborn barrel loose.
