I’m sure this is pretty elementary for most forum members but I may be playing catch up here. Can you show what some of the bushings look like and how you made them? For a barrel vise that will handle barrels for 1 1/2" on down, you'll need a vise that uses bushings. Bushings allow a wide range of makes, models and sizes. I have been using the same vise since '92, but I've made many more bushing sets for it since then.
If you are taking a barrel off, you want to hold it near the action. That diameter should be 1.25 inches. If you want to hold the end of a barrel to remove a muzzle brake, take the springs off the Viper vise and just clamp down. Without the springs it will collapse without jamming the springs in the top holes.I think I will buy one but I have a question. How do you accommodate smaller diameters? Is that what the dry wall tape is for, or is it just to protect the finish on the barrel?
I will take a pic or 2 for you. My vise is made of 1 1/2 x 2CR flat bar with a 1 1/2" hole bored for the bushings. The bushings are made of 1 1/2"CR or aluminum or Delrin. There are 4 half inch bolts to hold top to bottom with a bushing set and barrel in between. The bushings are lathe bored, then split in half length wise, then deburred. Just the width of the band saw blade is enough to allow the bushing to have grip on the barrel. I made a simple jig to hold the lathe bored bushing so I can cut it in half with my horizontal band saw. The only thing I missed was a compression spring to hold the vise open when putting a barrel in it. Give me a day or 2 for the pics, I have to work for a living......I’m sure this is pretty elementary for most forum members but I may be playing catch up here. You can make your own bushings for really small diameter barrels by taking a 1.50 piece of aluminum or brass round stock 3" long. If the diameter of the barrel is .75" then drill a .75" hole thru the round stock. Then cut it long ways on a band saw. You will now have a bushing just under .75" and it will have full grabbing power in the Viper Vise.I’m sure this is pretty elementary for most forum members but I may be playing catch up here. Hi Paul, To date there are just over 19,000 Viper Vises on the street. I keep my cnc machining center running 16 hours a day just making them. The Viper vise should be in the daily bulletin! That should really jump start things. Just a thought.

The dry wall tape give "bite", so the barrel doesn't slip.I think I will buy one but I have a question. How do you accommodate smaller diameters? Is that what the dry wall tape is for, or is it just to protect the finish on the barrel?
Paul, Your vise will ship tomorrow. Check your messages. BobThe Viper vise should be in the daily bulletin! That should really jump start things. Just a thought.

I don't suppose this offer still stands? I recently used a cheap Wheeler barrel clamp to remove a Savage barrel and would like to go a different route. I've been eyeing up the Gen II vise by PMA for a few weeks. If anyone, who is a registered member of this site, wants a Viper Barrel Vise, I will sell it to them for $50.00 + priority mail shipping. Plus I will donate $5.00 from every sale directly to the forum boss to help out with the cost of running this site.
I'll even do one better. If a club wants to give them out as awards, I will sell them, to the club, for $45.00 each (Minimum order of 10). You can contact me at 1-269-521-3671.
Let's see 21st. Century match that offer after they tried to copy the Viper Barrel Vise.

I sold Viper International this past October to a gentleman named Rod Weber and Hope.I don't suppose this offer still stands? I recently used a cheap Wheeler barrel clamp to remove a Savage barrel and would like to go a different route. I've been eyeing up the Gen II vise by PMA for a few weeks.
You should start making those and selling them I’d buy one. I’d have no way of drilling or boring a hole that big and I got a feeling a drill that large would cost a lot.You can make your own bushings for really small diameter barrels by taking a 1.50 piece of aluminum or brass round stock 3" long.
