Barrel Vise

The old question keeps on coming up. I am in need of a barrel vise that will break Remington 700 barrels off. You all know how frustrating it gets when you have a barrel that you cannot break off without breaking your blocks or swelling them to the point of using a pipe wrench to break the factory barrel off. Please send whatever info you have on whatever setup will end these problems. I am in the market for a real barrel vise. Thanks, Todd

MAKE ONE . I USED ABOUT 2 FT. OF 1.5" SQUARE STOCK AND IT STAYS BOLTED TO ME BENCH. PLENTY OF PLANS AND PICS IN THE NET, AND EASY TO DO.

No matter what brand of barrel vise you use, you need to apply a lot of heat to a factory installed barrel before it will snap off.. A good heat gun that they use to pull floor tiles off with will work just fine, a hair dryer will not be quite hot enough...
I would steer away from using a propane torch for obvious reasons, and a internal wrench for the job.. Brownells has all the stuff you need to do the job..

I built mine using two 1" bolts 15" long and three steel plates. The heart of it is a 6 ton bottle jack and blocks cast from pure lead. If you want pictures, PM me with your E-mail address (eiser to send pic). Hundreds of Remington barrels removed with out heat.

Todd must have run into one of the ones that look like this inside, and you will not take them off with out heat, period !!!!!!
I've taken off thousands of them and 99% of them do require heat to loosen them up...

This is the one that I built.

I made it out of 2.25" square 6061 aluminum bar stock. The best thing that I did was to install die springs between the top and bottom. It is nice to have it open by itself. I bored the hole in it 1.750 to be able to use Brownells inserts if I was too lazy to make them. I had it hard anodized. Powdered sugar is as good or better than rosin as a no slip item. I'm with Preacher in heating Remington and some other brand factory barrels. No use scoring the outside of the old barrels. They may have some value.

My biggest fear would be that you might twist the action without the use of heat on a factory Remington.

Butch, now that's what I'd call one extreme high end vise, very nice indeed it sure help to have a fab shop.

RJ,
There are wrenches that grip the OD or if you have a rear entry wrench that bears all the way to the front ring, you will have nothing to worry about.

Butch, That is excatly the vise I am looking for!! LOL!! How Much?? I know, Its not for sale!! If anyone has a real Barrel Vise for sale, Send me some pictures and price. I am sick of trying to make one work. I guess I am getting too old so now I am going to buy the best and junk the rest!! Thanks, Todd DuBose

It would if it would bear on the rear ring only. If you run it in all the way to the front ring you won't have a problem

Machine an insert for your barrel vise that fits a 700 bbl contour. Cut it with a lsitting saw. Wrap the bbl with a single layer of white notebook paper and heat with a propane torch.

Mine looks very simular to Butch's beatiful job but I made it to be held in a 20 ton hydraulic press. Less drilling & tapping. Barrels don't slip.

Larry, Lauging Out Loud! I live in Gonzales, Texas!! The only thing anyone here has is an oversized drill press!! I have the material and the knowledge but am just ready to buy one outright. Maybe someone here will want to sell a few if they post some pictures and make some extra cash besides getting to show off their wares and expertise. Lets see whoes in the market to build something like Butches. Any takers??

Finally started making my barrel vice. Finish boring hole for bushings and drill two holes for 3/4 mounting bolts. Making aluminum bushings will be next hurdle.

Mike,
You need to take it out of the mill and put spacers in and rebore. If you make the bushings to fit your hole as shown it won't be able to tighten down on the barrel.
