Barrel Vise Recommendations?

I see all of the talk about barrels slipping when using barrel blocks. I have had several that I even have bent using a barrel block. Barrel blocks are for Remington type actions. They hold the barrel and use a action wrench normally using the race ways to tighten. Savage is totally different your tightening a nut to the action. Their is no way you can properly tighten a nut without holding the action. Midway sells a action wrench for Remington guns that holds the action. It works perfect on all the small actions. I have two one I modified to hold the large target actions.

Do you use tape or leather or cardboard etc. wrapped around the bbl when you clamp it in the vise or action tool to prevent marring? What do you favor? I am leaning heavily toward a pre-fit Criterion, but how about McGowen? Thanks.

I have all 3 tools. I rarely use the barrel vise. I use the action wrench and nut wrench.
I have both McGowen and Criterion. I would use either one they are both great

4 - bolt design using 1 1/4" x 3" steel, 8" long. This mounts to a 3 1/2" x 7" I beam welded to a piece of 8" C - channel secured to the concrete floor with 4 - 5/8" concrete bolts. White oak inserts which compress to match the barrel profile. I apply powdered sugar liberally to the Oak inserts before tightening. Doesn't slip. Doesn't harm the barrel finish. Haven't failed to remove one yet, and some old Mausers will make you wonder.

I made this one from 2” X 2” bar and a pair of 5/8-18 socket head cap screws. I bolt it to the fabrication table when I use it. I turn bushings from 1 1/2” aluminum bar stock to fit shank or tapered section of barrel if straight section of shank is too short. Have been using one wrap of manila folder and rosin. It feels pretty solid while tightening the clamping nuts.
