Barrel Vise Opinions

What is considered the best barrel vise to use for general barrel removal such as Remington and some others. Savages are no problem w/o one. Thanks for the responses.

No matter what you use on a factory Remington, you will need a heat gun, some Kroil, and a day or more to let it soak in..
They put some nasty stuff on them....
It will need to be a heavy duty vise.
Brownells sells a good one..

Using a pipe wrench and throwing away the factory barrel is MORE rewarding

Thanks Preacher, Timbertoes and X ring. The picture Preacher sent is exactly why I asked the question. I think the pipe wrench and trash can are the best options.

There is a ready market for factory Remington barrels IF they don't have pipe wrench marks. They all come off and you certainly aren't going to put the new one on with a pipe wrench.

somewhere on the forum is a butch lambert post on his barrel vise.
similar to others. I also have an aluminum barrel vise I picked up cheap, and it wont cut it.

if you have the tools to make one, yea it is a b**ch to make. boring drilling and tapping big holes in steel.
the one brownells has with the bushings is essentailly the same without the hard work. not real cheap though.

This is a photo of the one that I made. I installed helicoils in the threaded part to keep the studs from pulling out of the aluminum. The best thing that I did was to install 2 punch press springs between the halves. I find it hard to hold the two parts when installing a barrel. I stole that idea from Jim Kobe.

I welded up a stand for it and turn aluminum collets for the barrels as I need them. I'm not good enough to fit the collets and barrel taper perfectly. I bed them with JB weld. I can use a 7' cheater bar if necessary.

?????????? Simple machining operations! All it takes is a little time and the materials. It's simpler than chambering, and everyone wants to do that!

It is a simple matter to make one, although the one brownells has will be a good one if you don't want to make one.

I am very happy with it, I would spring for the powder coated version at $58 it is a bargain.

EOD350, I recently completed machining up my own barrel vice.
I machined out the bore of it so as to accept the bushing that Brownell's sell for their own vice.
I'll try and post an image of it?

Yes, I see absolutely no point in doing Half a Job.
And if I'm going to make something, I'll only do it once!!!

A high quality, 2" capacity pipe vise works very well if you can find one.
Don't think I'd trust a Horrible Freight model though!
I've used one for about 30 years, mostly with epoxy molded Aluminum blocks and rosin. I've done all kinds of rifle barrels, and a few handguns with it, and never had one slip.
Only thing better in my opinion would be a hydraulic one, which I was always going to build, but never got 'rountuit!
