Ad-Vise Needed

Are there some barrel vise inserts to handle Remage pre-fit barrel swapping tasks that will work well using a general purpose vise, or do barrel vises need to be separate from your general purpose vise? On the other hand, is there a good barrel vise that easily pulls double-duty for other more general purpose tasks? Please don’t break my heart by telling me about this wonderful combo best ever vise that you have that they don’t make any more unless you are offering to sell it.

If the general purpose vise and barrel vise need to be separate, is there a good way to drop in the barrel vise on the workbench when you need it, or does it need to be more or less permanently mounted? Mount the barrel vise countersunk on some 3/4” plywood and clamp it down with c-clamps when you need it or drill the bolt holes for it in the bench top? If drilling a bolt hole pattern for temporary mounting, has anybody seen some tools that use a common hole pattern so you don’t have to drill too many hole patterns in your bench, or a good system to temporarily plug the holes when you are not using them, like some pieces of dowel with a little bevel on one end?

I purchased my barrel vise on Ebay for, I think, $65 shipped. It comes with 5 shims. I have already used it to remove a relatively stubborn R700 stock barrel from it's original action. Worked like a charm. I did do some clean up on the inserts (they're aluminum) and when that was done I was done. It's a tool, so pretty has no appeal to me. Might be a solid option.

You may be able to make some blocks up for your bench vise if it's a one time thing. Get a piece of square rod, bore out a hole, cut it in half and have at it.

Also, if you get the action wrench, you can put the action in it, that in your bench vise, and spin the nut off with the nut wrench. I've done that on a Savage. The wrench works for both actions. Only works if you are removing an already "nutted" barrel.

search great scott shooters supply and get one of his vises. none better for remington actions. dont even bother with the shim types. the viper barrel vise is good too.

You said Remage, so no big torque stress's? A hardwood block with a hole in it might very well work. Be cheap enough to try.
Bar that you could simply put a bald eagle vise in your bench vise. Wouldnt hold as well as if used as intended but may work

I put my davidson vise in my bench vise every time i use it.

This is the same vise I use as well. I bored and tapered the blank insert for an exact match to factory Remington barrel tapers and it will take off any barrel.
