Barrel twist

How well does an 8 twist barrel stabilize 50gr 22cal bullet

It could over spin it. You can stabilize a 50 in pretty much every 223 rifle barrel ever made. An 8 is designed for something in the 69 to 75 range.

The reason that 223s have such sensitivity to bullet weight changes is that for a few grains change in weight there is a big change in length, and the length to rotation ratio is what is critical to stability.

actually 1/8's have done well with 52/53/55....
ypu will have to try the 50's to find out.....

XTR is right on with his statement here! I had a 9tw. 22-250 that would vaporize 52gr. Speer Varmint bullets with modest loads! However, that could have been attributed to the Savage barrel that was rifled with a rattail file :o!

A 223 barrel shouldn't be an issue. I've shot them with good results. 22-250 maybe not so much, a definite maybe.

If your are looking for a "plinker-Varmint " bullet the 55 gr Nosler FBHP (dogtown-Varmint nightmares) are the best for my 1-8 twist .223 50$ for 500 of them.

But you will be able to shoot the 50's easily.

Gary,
As has been said, you are gonna have to do some testing to know for sure. My 1:9 Varmint rifle loves 52 & 53's and starts to drop off in accuracy with 55's. Anything heavier (like 69s) are horrible in my particular rifle, even though conventional guides say 69's should shoot well. Simply ain't so. Guides are just that and not absolutes. Hence you won't know unless you try it out.
