I am having a Rem 700 Varminter rebarreled to no turn 6mm BR Lapua for shooting 55 to 70 grain bullets out to 400 yards for woodchucks. Probably th 65 grain Hornady will be my first choice. Any suggestions on rate of twist and manufacturer?

Ed--My recommendation is 1:14 ... I have one and it shoots Sierra 55-gr. BlitzKings into ragged little holes, best of .192") @ 100 with 33.5-gr. Benchmark. With 31.5-gr. of Benchmark it shoots 65-gr. Vmax's into the high .200s and .300s very consistently. The 70-gr. Sierra Match HPBT shoots in the .2s and .3s with 33.5-gr. of Varget. These loads are not hot in my gun, but start low for safety.

My barrel is a used Shilen benchrest barrel that was a take-off 6 PPC that had "lost it's edge" for benchrest shooting. All the major manufacturers make good barrels. If buying a new one I would start with Pac-Nor, Krieger or Douglas -- the best grade you can afford. Order a minimum-spec factory chamber in 6 BR Norma with .272" neck and you'll be in for a treat.

1:14 will give you the best accuracy and probably best velocity with the 55-65 grainers. For a varmint rifle, we'd probably go 1:12, just because it will let you shoot the 75gr V-max and 80gr FB bullets, such as Fowler) as well. The owner of the current gun of the week even reports his 1:12 Shilen stabilizes the 87gr V-max, at least out to 400yards. YMMV,,Maybe his twist is closer to 1:11 on that particular barrel). If you're really going to stick to the 65 V-max the 1:14 would be a great choice. But we think you might find you like the 75gr V-max even better for those long shots.
