6BR twist rate

I want to buy a 6BR barrel for my Savage LRPV. I'm thinking of going with a 1-8 twist. My question is have any of you had any problems with 55-58 bullets coming apart with this fast of a twist? I'm going to use it for live varmints and informal target shooting and would like to be able to shoot 105's & 107's, but most of the time I will be shooting bullets in the 55-87gr range.
Anyone have any suggestions on the number of grooves? The local bench rest guys seem to like the three groove barrels. Is there any problem with using a three groove for a varmint gun?

I use a 1 in 12 PacNor on my 6BR with 55 grain Blitzkings. I have also shot 58 and 65 grain V Maxs well. For these bullets I would get another 1 in 12 twist.

I have a 6mm BR barrel with a 1 in 7.5" twist that I will be experimenting with to see if I can shoot lighter bullets. It, or course, shoots the 105grn. + bullets extremely well. The lowest I've shot, thus far, is 95grn. Bergers but I want to try varmint bullets in the 68grn. to 87grn. range. If they don't fly apart, they should be explosive on varmints.

I have another 6mm BR barrel with a 1 in 14" twist that shoots 65grn. to 70grn. bullets very well. I'm going to try some 55grn. bullets to see how it performs.

I have several three groove Pac Nor barrels and they are great. The only difference I've noticed is they clean easier; no difference in accuracy that I can detect.

The 1-8 twist barrel will shoot 75grn on up to 105grn bullets very well. I went with a 1-8 twist on my 6BR, so I can shoot the 87grn V-Max aswell as the 105grn A-Max bullets. You can't go wrong with the 1-8 twist barrel. However, if you go with a slower twist barrel, you will limit yourself with bullet selection.

Skunce,

One problem with the 55, 58 is that you can have trouble touching the lands in most guns. Also if you are throating for the 105 & 107, it may be farther out. I would just move up to 70 gr to 87 gr. I think you will find they work better anyway.

I had PTG grind my reamer for the lighter bullets in the range of 58-87 grains. Since I hadn't ever chambered a barrel before I bought a Adams and Bennett F44 barrel from Midway and fit it to an old 788 action. The quality of that barrel really surprised me it will shoot 1/2" three shot groups all day long and cleans up very easily. For my next barrel I'm going to buy a Bartlein to install on the LVPR. If I decide to shoot the heavier bullets I'll buy a different reamer maybe a Dasher and an eight twist barrel. I'm looking forward to trying out the 6BR on rockchucks next year.
