Barrel swap

I purchased a barrel from Northland Shooters Supply, that Jim is a really nice fella, its a Shilen SS select match in 20 Practical. At first I was going to swap barrels with my 6x45, then buy another action. I saw a new Savage Axis Combo for $350.00 and said to myself a complete rifle for less than the cost of a new action. My question is, are the standard small shank Savage barrels interchangeable with the Axis actions. Thanks for all replies.

I do not own a Savage Axis so I am not 100% positive about this, but from what I have read on another site the answer is YES they will fit.Supposedly same barrels off the same line at Savage.
I do own a dozen Savages and two Stevens they are the same and I can't see them changing thread pitch or shank size for the economy offering.Too expensive for retooling to do it.

I purchased the Savage Axis and to my surprise it looks as though Savage has designed this gun so that the action, trigger, magazine and stock remain as a set. The recoil lug is no longer part of the barreled action, it is embedded into the stock with a cut out in the bottom of the action for it to fit between the action and barrel nut against the threads of the barrel, making the stock unique to the action and seemingly impossible to replace unless someone designs a wood or fiberglass stock that can also incorporate the marriage of the trigger guard and magazine. The only thing that seems to have not changed is the barrel threads and the size of the barrel nut. So it looks as though I'm going to have to re-contour my barrel or find someone who can fit my barrel to the stock. Any suggestions, please!

Rons go over to www.savageshooters.com there is an entire section just for the Axis. A few have coverted an some have posted how to's.
There are a few homemade stocks with pics of the process and a few on improving the factory stock. Just go and ask, you'll get your answers.
