Barrel Storage

Best way to store spare barrels? Horizontal fully supported, two support pegs, vertical? What say you? Can a barrel take a detrimental set?
Snow is melting......Ye haw!! ;D Happy Easter..

Coat 'em inside and out with WD40, wrap in brown wrapping paper, store lying flat on shelf. The shelf doesn't take any more room than a couple of pegs and it prevents things passing near the stored barrels to contact and damage them. Storing them on end risks a fall to either side and damaging the finish, threads or, in some instances, the muzzle.

I doubt a barrel stored on it's end would ever be a problem to you, but most of the shops store them on there horizontal plane.. you do know about planes, right 'O)
I sure wouldn't want to store them with WD-40, and then need to clean off the gunk that ends up on them after that stuff dry's hard..
Wipe them down good with a Silicone treated cloth, and your GTG......
I store mine in the snakeskin sleeves they come in, with end caps to protect both ends from any damage..

I'm not a fan of useing WD-40 around guns. Break free or Kroil are my go to oils for coating/preserving. I use a very light coat of Kroil in the bore of my 6PPC before shooting, as recomended by Jim Borden.

I agree with those of you who don't recommend using WD40 around guns. It's an aggressive penetrant and it'll find its way into all sorts of little places; especially harmful to primers.
But for storing a barrel (sans action, stock, etc.) I have found that it can provide a protective coating to prevent damage from moisture. Any stiffening (hardening) of the coating that develops (over quite a lengthy period of time) cleans away easily with an initial wipe down with a fresh coat of WD40, followed by a Kroil wetted cloth (or similar penetrating solvent) to do the finish wipe down.

Rod,

If you were shooting like you should be you would not have any spare barrels. :) I use kroil in the bore.

+1 or 3 or whatever on Kroil. What I have been using for spare barrel storage is a piece of 1 1/4" PVC tube with a cap glued on one end, put a piece of foam, newspaper or whatever won't harm anything in the bottom & slide it in. I keep a couple at the lathe all the time to slide barrels into . Works great & you'll never have a dinged barrel.
