Barrel Sources, Best twist for .22 Build?

Adam 6mm build

My club is going to start having 200@300yrd varmint shoots 22 cal only does anyone know where I could locate a ready to ship a 1-7.5 or a 1-8 twist 22 cal light varmint contour match barrel blank thanks Adam

So in my last post I received some good leads where to locate a 22 cal blank now here is the question I will b building on a 722 action I have a 2000 22 cal 80 grn smks would you go 1-7 twist or 1-8 twist option for reamer are 222mag or 223ai WHAT WOULD U BUILD this is for shooting club 200@300yrd varmint matches

If both are available, I’d go with the 7 twist as there really isn’t any downside, and it would allow you to shoot some heavier billets if you wanted to later on. I would absolutely chamber it in a straight .223 with some extra freebore. If you will only (or mainly) be shooting out to 300 yards with it, the additional cost and hassle of a wildcat will not be worth it. A good number of Palma shooters are shooting .223 at 1000 yards these days with good success.

Good luck.

I have the reloading components for both 222MAG and the 223ai just never shoot the heavier bullets in rather calibers

.223 AI all the way. Plenty of Brass available. Load and fire form while braking in Barrel.
See if Bug Holes has a 7.7 Krieger on the shelf.

8 twist and you don't need an AI for 300 yards. A standard .223 is good enough, you will need a long throat with 80's. If you are going to have a reamer made, send them a dummy round with the bullet seated where you want it. I had mine made so the beginning of the boat tail seats to the junction of the shoulder and the neck.

Long bullets, why not a cartridge with a neck. Then you can partially resize. The unsized base of the neck will center the bullet in the chamber. .222 Remington Magnum!! .22 PPC! Even Stoner built the first AR-15 in .222 Remington Magnum. The military compromise .223 did not prioritize benchrest accuracy. Most matches at 200yds and 300yds are won with 6mm PPC shooting 65-68gr bullets.

Go 7.7 or 8 twist. You don't want to risk bullet blow ups. Greg at Bugholes is a great source. Krieger direct is good too if you see something on their inventory list. 223 ISSF reamer or a similar 223AI design is good, although I'd strongly recommend a 22BR in absence of other limitations. It will perform better than a 223 ever will in any configuration and be much easier to get shooting. For a 22BR, I'd go 0.100" freebore and a 0.254" neck for no turn/light skim.

Id do a 22 grinch, 22 ppc, or 22 br or bra personally. Probably a 22 bra for the speed, and medium weight flat base bullets.

Bugholes.com.
If they are out of stock, select the "notify me when in stock box" it's like giving Santa a wish list.
8 twist for anything Berger. If you want to shoot heavy Sierras, they recommend more twist.
Brux is my vendor of choice

Bartlein is making some outstanding shooting barrels but so does Krieger, Brux and Hart so can't really go wrong with any of those.

I have a 223AI with a 9tw Hart and it shoots incredibly well but the gain is fairly minimal and for what the OP is looking for I would agree with Evan, skip past the 223AI and build yourself a 22BR.

Use a no turn reamer for necked down Lapua 6BR brass and you'll have more case capacity for launching those heavies than a 223AI with no fireforming. You'll have a little extra brass prep because you have to neck the brass down but at least you won't be eating up valuable primers and powder forming brass.
