Barrel removal

Ok guys don’t make fun.

I got a 40x 220 Swift that’s about shot out. I want to put a Shilen barrel/nut on. I have an action wrench - is it doable to make a cut on the barrel close to the action with a hacksaw to reduce the “pressure contact “ so to easily turn the barrel off. ?

How close?

I sell the Larry Scott Ultimate Barrel Vise. Larry said he probably cracked loose 1000 factory Remingtons with his vise. He said the trick is to hold the recoil lug. That's what he said.

Yes what you are proposing is a method
I have done this myself, I used a parting tool though to get a more exact cut rather than a hacksaw which could wander and nick the action
I made a cut approx .010 away from the face of the action
At a depth to about tenon dia.
this allows the remaining material that is butted up against the action to push away and back into the relief groove to allow for easier barrel removal

I'll add this works great for barrels that have been installed on a rifle for 100 years :P
rather than fighting it

With a good vise and action wrench, it shouldn't be needed. A 3' cheater bar and a dead blow hammer go a long way to get stubborn barrels off.
This along with some rosin on the barrel in the vice. A few good whacks and the action will start moving. The glue on the threads is what you have to overcome.

I just removed a bergara barrel from action would not budge about 2 raps with electric impact and off she came .
