Barrel removal

Ok guys don’t make fun.

I got a 40x 220 Swift that’s about shot out. I want to put a Shilen barrel/nut on. I have an action wrench - is it doable to make a cut on the barrel close to the action with a hacksaw to reduce the “pressure contact “ so to easily turn the barrel off. ?

How close?

i know people have made relief cuts on barrels in front of the action on the lathe for this reason. so far knock on wood ive never had to. never heard with a hacksaw but im sure its been done and could be done. you would want to cut as close to action face as you could to relieve the tension. i would be concerned about cutting into the action face and so probably wouldnt do that. especially on a 40X —. i bet you could find someone near you who would remove that barrel fairly cheap. But if you gotta do it its certainly possible. oh yeah since its a rem 700 pattern you may need to heat it to release the glue.

I wouldn’t do that unless you had to…heat it up hot, but enough that it won’t mess up your finish but hot enough to soften the glue they use. Then put it in a vice and use a wrench to put pressure on the action…smack the hell out of the left side of the recoil lug with a brass hammer and it’ll break it loose.

Hard to describe but easy to do.

Heat and a mesh reinforced hernia repair.
I don't use heat but my fixture captures the recoil lug to prevent the barrel from rotating. T-handle with extensions on each side to balance the load.

It might have something to do with super human effort it takes to crack the bond between the three surfaces that usually have developed a rusty bond. Using a t-handle is important.

I have to try the heat and lug rap kinda warm it a bit and rap the lug sounds like a easier way..Hope you get it barreled and shoot some bugholes

Took apart a 40x yesterday. The "bang" it made when it popped loose still has my ears ringing. Lesson learned.
Local guy asked advice about taking his off a 700. He got it cracked loose but for some reason decided not to remove the scope as I had advised. The scope sounded like shaking a box of Cracker Jacks.

Some learn from advice. Others have to pee on an electric fence themselves to fully understand. ;)
