Barrel polishing?

I like a constant reminder that these things are dangerous.

"Fun" fact. Almost all serious hand injuries are on your off hand. I'm left handed. Left hand holds tool, right hand gets injury.

Second fun fact... While one handed, I built an "AR Tac" legal f class rifle that won me a state championship.

I never really figured out how to crack eggs with one hand, though.

At least you didn't have to learn to wipe your back side off handed! That never feels right, lol!

I know all about hand injuries. Luckily this one didn't happen in the shop. Providing external link in case anyone is eating breakfast or has a weak stomach.

Yuck - how did that happen? last year i ripped the knuckle skin almost all the way off my right middle finger getting to close to a disk sander. they sewed it back on and it has healed well. Ive hurt myself plenty of times and have turned into a big fan of not doingthatanymore!!

Chainsaw. I slipped and she fell. Right hand smack the bottom of the chain. Severed the tendon in the middle finger.

I'm a huge fan of foot pedal momentary switches. I don't like limb modifiers running on their own.
My Victor has a 4 foot long foot stop. Last time I needed it was for
the coolant nozzle. Should have been using a chip breaker. Which
reminds me as a drill press was mentioned. My old shop had an
American Hole Wizard, radial drill. I was in the office when I heard
a loud thump and the power dropped out. One of the guy's that knew
better was pre-boring steel plate and a hefty spiral grabbed his un-
tucked flannel shirt. The floor supervisor pulled the main, killing
power. No cuts or lacerations, but he did break a rib. And let me tell
you why our surface grinders had manual throw pole magnets. Ya'
don't want to have a face full of exploding grinding wheel and steel
parts flying when power goes out on the magnet......Play safe fellas !!

My hand injury happened to my dominant hand. I used to sawmill for a living. A classic example that crap happens. I've been left-handed ever since!
Working on lathes can be dangerous. I avoided serious injury or death a couple of times. Both times happened when the tailstock moved and dropped the workpiece. Once appeared to be from vibration. The other time, on a CNC machine, chips had built up on the ways to the point that, when the carriage went back to rest it pushed the tailstock back. The workpiece, a piece 4140 five feet long and thirteen inches in diameter, fell down and climbed right over the tool post. I was lucky it didn't roll right over me. The point is, it's good to try and anticipate potential problems, and avoid those with serious consequences.
A friend was caught when his coveralls got wound up in the feedshaft on a big lathe. He was able to hit the switch in time but was badly bruised.
By the way, those barrels shown by Urbanrifleman are nicely done. I don't see any obvious ripples and the finish is nice. WH

Damn.

I really want a surface grinder but I've heard some stories...

I've always used paper and an old wood lathe I modified. Of interest to me was the use of scotchbrite to finish. I'm going to try that on the next barrel. I don't like high gloss but I do want a smooth surface, even if it's going to get bead blasted.
