Barrel nuts on Ruger 77

Is it possible or does it make sense to use a barrel nut on a Ruger 77, or Remington 700 in order to make them switch barrel rifles? I see they use them on the American Rifle. I may rebarrel one of them one of these days. Thanks Barlow

I have never done it but others have done it a lot on 700's. Google up Remage & see if anything pops up. That's the term that they have used to describe it.

I have a lot of swith barreled 700 remington's and don't feel the need for a nut.
Once they are headspace all you need to do is screw them on, nothing else needs done, no head spacing, no nothing...

It don't matter who made them, once a barrel is headspaced to a action it will never change unless you try to screw it on another action....

Barlow -

In my opinion, unless you want to use pre-chambered barrels, a barrel nut is a poor way of fitting a barrel.
When a barrel is fitted/chambered to a given action, the fit and headspace are basically set, and all that needs down is like Preacher stated: "all you need to do is screw them on, nothing else needs done, no head spacing, no nothing..."

Many do away with the barrel nut on Savage's when the barrels are fitted/chambered to the action.

You cant do it with a ruger m77 as they are a claw extractor and would have to be timed.

This is wrong, see my next comment.

I am rebarreling my Ruger M77 7mm Rem Mag and the factory barrel has no cut out for a claw extractor.

I have been schooled as I thought the ruger had a cut out and it doesn't so I freely admit mr moran that I made a mistake. I have one or two in my room and never looked at them in agaes so we all make boo boo's. So now it would be quite possible to do it. I don't know what thread pattern they use but if its the same as a Remington or savage your good otherwise you would have to have a barrel nut made by your smith.

If that is the worst thing that happened to you that day Mr. Bearman, it was a good day. ;)
