re-barrel a ruger 77 action.

Is a ruger mdl 77 action any good to rebarrel? I have a varmint model I am either going to sell or get a new barrel. what do you guys think?

I had a MKII Target/Varmint that I rebarreled to .243/ 7.5" twist that was superbly accurate. Between the extra metal at the top of the action to the flat, bedding friendly action bottom and a bedding screw that pulls the action into the pillar/bedding there is a lot to like about the Ruger action. If you do not have one with a target trigger there are plenty of after market triggers out there now as well. Mine was given to a shooter who needed but could not afford one. Unfortunately he passed away suddenly and I can not get the rifle back or I would still be shooting it!

Re-barrelled a 77MKIIVT 22-250 with a 8 twist 26" Hart barrel in 6BR about 3 years ago. I didn't have high expectations, but this turned out to be one of the better guns that I've put together in quite a few years.

With 108 grain Bergers, it consistently shoots 7 shot groups in the mid to high 0.2's @ 100 yards and the best 5 shot group I've posted at 600 yards is 1.491".

With 80 grain Bergers, it shoots in the high 0.1's to low 0.2's with amazing regularity at 100 yards with the best 7 shot group measuring 0.067"

No complaints here!

I found a $210 featherweight Ruger tang Safety 77 in .270 win a couple of years ago. Nice carry rifle, but not much for accuracy when shooting targets. Had it rebarreled to 7x57 mauser with a F54 A&B barrel. Yep, a cheap barrel. Chuckle, it is now one very accurate rifle.

You need to work with the trigger or get a Timney. Maybe change the springs. I've got mine down to 8oz's. I'll be shooting it this Saturday at Harrison, MI. Score shoot. Shilen barrel. I've had a PAC-NOR and variety of barrels on it. This is a older Ruger 77V. Tang safety.

I traded for a M77 MarkII and rebarrelled it to 22-250AI with a #3 Shilen then bedded it into a Boyd Classic stock. I had a hard time getting it to shoot any bullet until I tried H4895 and CCI Magnum primers. Now it is a very good shooting rifle that will shoot in the low 2's all day with 55 grain Nosler BTips. I bedded the bottom metal in also because the inletting is very generous on the Boyd's stock. Then I carefully torqued the action screws to 45 inch pounds making sure the magazine box still floated. I installed a Timney at the same time. Shoots great and I am glad I didn't trade it. Good luck with your project.
