BARREL NOT CENTERED

I have a Savage 12 and I bought a replacement stock, it is a Savage target stock. It is already bedded with Devcon. The only problem is the barrel is not perfectly centered. My question is, to fix this problem, will I have to remove the bedding and start over? nilebartram

The issue might NOT be your bedding job or the stock, though you should certainly inspect carefully. We have seen Savage actions in which the threads were NOT drilled properly (both off-axis side to side and up/down). Consequently the barrels did not point straight. Savage ended up replacing the complete barreled action on warranty.

Yes it is free-floating. The difference is .075". nilebartram

It could be a couple of things...

1.) Non-concentric barrel
2.) Recoil lug has high spots, or is canted (take the barreled action out of the stock and see if it's centered).
3.) Barrel nut has high spots where it meets the action.

If you have an action and barrel nut wrench, I've been able to 'correct' it a few times by changing the recoil lug orientation.

That said, you'll probably have to re-bed once you figure it out.

Edit: If you bought a used stock that somebody else had already bedded, it's possible your action is just fine, and they 'corrected' theirs while bedding (i.e. put tension on the barrel to center it while the bedding cured). If it's straight in your factory stock, it's possible nothing is wrong with your setup at all.

Every action is different, warps different etc , and should be rebedded for the new action .
BUT , everything that was previously said about the receiver / barrel threads is correct. Check everything.
Remove the barreled action from the stock and roll the barrel on a flat surface with the receiver hanging off end . You'll see if the threads are canted real quick. The receiver will roll in an elliptic.

No two factory receivers seem to have the same amount of warpage! Lol. Best to re bed it and be done with it. Good luck and have fun.

Minor differences in action dimensions from machining variances, all within spec, will likely render the previous bedding useless. Not in all cases, but likely. I'd check to see if the rear tang is free floated anyway, and if it is, shoot it and see how it performs. It might just surprise you. Otherwise, you'll be bedding it again.

Question for the brain trust here; Presuming the .075 measurement was taken at the fore end, that's a tiny angle to be off axis with the stock. What kind of issues would manifest itself if the intention is shooting competitively? And would it depend upon it being off to the right with a right handed shooter as opposed to a left handed, and vise versa.

Curious minds are never satisfied.

Another vote for re-bedding...I just did 3 Remington SA 700s with factory barrels . Out of curiosity I tried swapping them around , put them right back in their proper homes . They may have shot OK , I did not bother . I have also found not all bedding blocks are put in true .
