Barrel Nitriding: 11,000 round update

I believe they recommend a barrel with no more than 25 rounds through them. I clean an lap the throat before having them treated. If you polish your barrel before treating, it will look similar to a Weatherby Mk5 gloss finish.
 
Butch, Joel Kendrick and MMI said no more than 100rds through the barrel on light cartidges (read non overbore). I have had five barrels treated, all 22cal and under. The were made by Shilen, Pac Nor, and Rock Creek. I haven't had an issue with anything I have put through them, from 20PPC to 22 Mink (a 1.150" 22K Hornet). All delievered at least 150fps faster than the non treated barrl and cleaned eaiser. Now I have a fellow small caliber shooter in North Carolina who has taken to using Moly in treated barrels and he said it his barrels even better. He is still getting .25" groups and able to go 300rds at minimun on cleaning. I know some will be skeptics as was I. I ran HBN coated bullets through some of my barrels and none liked them, not a single one. I didn't though, try Moly. On my next barrel I will. HBN in a coated barrel lowered the peak chamber pressure so much that I was able to run almost 25% over my previous max in my rifles, but accuracy was horrid.

Now mind you that I shoot bullets as fast as I can accurately and fully believe barrels are consumeables. My barrels have lasted without show of wear for about half as long as your (cause that's all I've shot them). But I fully believe they'll see 11,000 rounds without issue. I also believe Moly in treated barrels may also be an unforeseen life extender in these treated barrels, and I will be testing them this summer.

Do you know the difference between them and H&M Metal processing?? Is there a difference in the coating?

I am sure they are all the same or so similar there shouldn't be concern. For MMI the cost was 70$ or there abouts shipped for a barrel, something like $50 for a bolt, and the same for an action.

There are other treatment facilities out there too, but they may not accept from personal address'. HEFUSA was the one Joel Kendrick plugged for but has since gone to MMI. I have come accross a few others but can't remember the names.

All in all it's a cheaper/ better alternative to bluing and SS IMO.

yea this sounds amazing i just bought a CBI 243win 28Inches long for my new F-Open rig and if i can extend the barrel life from 1k round to 4K or more then i feel like its well worth the investment now.
 
I have been wanting to send off a sleeve of barrels to get treated but have been waiting on them to all be chambered and broke in before sending them off as one package.
 
Actually I have almost completely given up on breaking in a barrel. I do not shoot benchrest except for the occasional 50/50 club match. I am fully happy if a barrel will shot inside of half inch repeatedly all day and I have not needed to break a barrel in to reach those standards. I was just going to shoot 5 groups of five with my best loads for similar rifles to have a before and after comparison. Going to do a 21 inch 300winmag barrel, a 23 inch 6.5x55ai barrel and a fast twist shilen 243 barrel at 26 inches. Still waiting on the 2 barrels for the 300winmag and the 6.5 barrel but the shilen looks great so far. I will be sure to post the results once everything is done but I am leaving the country again for another 5 months tomorrow. so it will be a while.
 
I know how it feels i am just about to get back from my sandbox adventure. But i will be posting the my finding's as soon as I get home.
 
Does anyone know if they'll accept barrels with 100+ rounds shot thru them? I'm talking about 308 WIN & Tubb T2K barrels. Not sure I want to drop for a Krieger from White Oak and then just shoot 25 but ... if that is my only option ?
 
I don't break in barrels anymore. Lap the reamer fuzz out of the throat and send it to Trutec. Eric, it is not a coating. It could be described as a case hardening process. With my Deltronic pins, I can measure no dimensional change. I have them in .0001 increments for ea. caliber that I chamber.
 
OK, since this thread seems to be going that way, here is another question to throw into the pot. Before the barrel blank is chambered would you be better served to get it cryoed before chambering, the have the bbl. chambered and have it sent to Trutrc after that? This thread is getting better every day!

If you buy one of the barrels that is currently winning matches, I am not sure that you would gain anything at all by having is cryoed after chambering. Krieger does his before they are drilled, which I believe is the correct order.
