Barrel Nitriding: 11,000 round update

I have over 20,000 rounds through various nitride barrels. Some of the loads have been very hot, and most are on the AR platform. Not one has exploded. I wouldn't worry about 'loss of strength thru loss of temper' causing a barrel to explode.

I have a brand new unfired 6CM (Comp Match) that is waiting for me to find time to play. Since it was built around a black Pierce action it will make an excellent test case. I will contact MMI and get instructions on how to proceed.

Joe, I've sent you 3 e-mails on this and all 3 have been kicked back.
Joe, that is a sweet looking rifle, you will be pleased with the 6CM.

Hi Don,
Are you sending it from an iPad or other tablet like that? I'm receiving e-mails just fine. A friend of mine has had issues like that with her iPad.

The temperature that the steel is brought up to during this process is within the range that can remove the temper from the steel if not properly finished potentially causing the steel to become dangerous and not contain the pressures your cartridge will produce.

Gabonny,
I believe the company doing this has not fallen off the turnip truck yet. Our military has many many done and how many have blown up? You can take any process, be it making cheese or treating barrels and can find a way to make it dangerous.
Give me a break, show some links to some that have blown up.

I was just passing the opinion and info from one top barrel manufacturer. I do not think Krieger has fallen off the turnip truck yet.

I agree, but they are in the business of selling barrels. If barrels last twice as long that cuts their replacement business in half. Would you expect them to be supportive of that?

Kindest regards,

Joe

Many years ago there was an article in PS about a hardening process. I think the barrels were made by Blackstar. I Might be wrong on the name, but they were hardening the tubes up to something like 70c. If I remember right this was in the late 90's. Does anyone out there remember this? Is the new process different than the old "Blackstar" process?

Sorry to hyjac, but if it is/was the same process there may well be some long term data out there.

Tod

Yes,
I know about the Deathstar barrels. They were not hardened, they used an electo polish to the inside of the LW barrels. Didn't stay in business very long.
About 1995 they sent the"company shooter" to a match to shoot against us in Houston. He left after the first day of the shoot and never came back. Seems his tail was tucked between his legs. It didn't matter if they lasted for ever if they wouldn't shoot a hole through a bucket.

They were using the Lothar Walther LW50 barrels. As Jackie Schmidt said, the were like machining 17-4. He won a couple and didn't like them and said it would be a disservice to give them to somebody. They really really became true tomato stakes.
