Barrel manufacturers use borescopes?

Like many things I am presently using a bore scope as part of my learning process. I monitor what I see on the target, I monitor the interior of my barrels, I monitor the results of my cleaning efforts and I take extensive notes. Eventually I will determine what I need to pay attention to and what I can ignore just like all other aspects of shooting and reloading.
I find it interesting that anyone would recommend that you never look inside a rifle barrel. There's nothing in there that can't be understood with experience and critical thinking. However if you never look you're simply guessing about many things including the effectiveness of your cleaning, throat erosion, bore surface condition and many others. Personally I prefer to have as much information to evaluate and work with as possible.

but are they still used by barrel makers?
I know one major gun manufacturer that does NOT own a single borescope!

I've owned several, some shoot good most don't. When I rebarrel with a custom barrel it invariably shoots very very much better.

Bore scopes are a great tool but they do magnify things to the point people freak out over things that are often unavoidable and inconsequential to how the gun shoots. I'm not at all saying they are of no value, just that you have to look at a lot of bbls to know what you're looking at and what matters. Even then, it's pretty rare to be able to declare something seen with a bore scope as the cause of a bbl being bad or great. They allow us to see obvious abnormalities or deficiency in our cleaning routine but not much else that can be gained. It's good to keep perspective of the size of what we see, too. For example, a typical land is about .004" tall. That looks like a mountain compared to some things that cause some to worry. I've seen some really ugly stuff that shot great and some near pristine bbls/chambers that never lived up to expectations, too. So what did I learn from either?I can answer that one...Spend more time worrying about the target and less time worrying about a "flaw" that winds up being a teeny piece of lint or similar. Use them to "build confidence" in your gun and cleaning regimen rather that letting one destroy your confidence. I'd say 99% of the time, confidence is worth more than what you might be seeing with a bore scope.

I have and use a borescope. Could not get my grandsons 6.5 PRC to group at all. Worst rifle I've ever dealt with. Run the borescope down it. Gasp, that gun got sold

I wonder how many bbls have been replaced becuse of the many pics that look like that one, even though the gun might have shot well for a factory bbl. Of course a premium bbl will look better and in all likelihood outshoot a factory bbl.

Savage. My question is, "Is this intentional?" Mine shoot great, but they are copper monsters.
Have you ever just let the copper go and got the carbon out and seen how it shot? If you clean all the copper out of those canyons it just has to build back up to normalize. That is a barrel you need to let the target dictate the cleaning routine or youll go crazy.

If you want one, get one. Don't ask everyone else what "you" should do. It's just like politics... Here's a neat little story about bore quality. I had my old man's K98 (1904 8mm) drilled and tapped for a scope (by a very well know gunsmith that was local to us) about 16-17 years ago, cause Dad wanted a scope on the old girl. The guy (gunsmith) was a master at Mauser and 03 rifles. He'd built plenty of wall hangers (I call them) that were magnificent to look at and commonly rebarreled them to 30-06 and they shot fantastic! Well, he did the work and told me that I'd be back for a new barrel (in short order) after we got the scope mounted and shot in because it's one of the worst bores he'd ever seen! And that's saying something! He said the pavement out on the road was smoother and this particular bore had giant voids from years of corrosive ammo use and neglect and that there's no way it would even be worth trying to get a group. Well, I found a nice mild load with 180 gn Nosler bullets that consistently hold one moa (and often under) and showed him the targets to prove it. He was astonished to say the least! I showed him several targets and he grabbed me by the shoulder and said "Boy, Don't you EVER clean that barrel"! Told me to ride that horse for as long as you can! I've been tempted over the years to buy a scope just to see for myself but just never have ; )

My smith says to throw my borescope away.
OK, but are they still used by barrel makers?
In my experience, no. Had one horrible 6mm barrel years ago and now dealing with a new Sako rifle (back to maker for evaluation) that needs a new barrel. Original is horribly marred, scared and just atrocious.

I borescope every new barrel, every one.

Remember, this opinion is from PRS where the precision part is getting impacts on 2 to 6 moa targets. Different needs.

Now that said, I have more than just cleaning uses for borescopes.
