Barrel length for a 284win?

I am wanting to get a 284 built that will be throated to run the 180's and already have a barrel laying around but it will only be long enough to get me to about 28".
Do any of you shoot a barrel this length or will I need to go longer to be competitive at 1000yds??

If you are talking about going to 30" you will gain about 50f.p.s. That is it.. You can EASILY get to 1000 yards with a 28" barrel.. Use it and don't look back. Once you burn that barrel up, then you can go longer.

Thanks very much for the responses, just wanted to make sure. Plan on running the 180 Hybrids but also want to give the 162 A-Maxs a try. Seems like they would be a great bullet as well, surprised more people don't run them.

Because they get beat by the 180's, that's why people don't use them.

28" will work well.

With the 180 Hybrids and Lapua brass necked up, what freebore and neck tension should I run? Sorry for all the questions, just want to get it right the first time.

.189 - .225 freebore will work well.

~.002" neck tension.
